Some folks here use various smartphone apps which I wouldn't give a nickle for(very limited cell service in the area). You could call Grayson Highlands State Park for a good idea of recent weather and forecast. The Park is not very close to any real towns so I'd call them for the best info. Also lots of open high country and thunderstorms are common this time of the year,so a good tent is a good thing.I did 2 trips there a few months ago and it's a great place. The Nat Geo map #318 is well worth $12.Lots of signage there but the map helps with navigation and might help in case of bad weather. There has been plenty of rain so far and most water sources should be running.

Forecast for the town of Whitetop, which is a pretty good stand-in for the high country.

We were up there a week ago and the water was running pretty well.

Beautiful area altogether. A place that I will visit again with my son very soon as well.

I agree with Cranky, signage is great in the area, and some really nice views. The ponies are a hoot!!

Hope you enjoy your trip with your son

As the hostel host in Troutdale, VA I can say to much water is the problem.

Do not leave any gear unattended when in the Pony zone. One of them had my hiking pole in his mouth when I went to get water at Thomas Knob shelter.Several trail register entries there also told of similar incidents.
