    Default Lost hikers burn clothes

A Mensa meet-up for hiking turns into a potentially deadly situation; hikers burn clothes for light; use cellphone to call for emergency help; hikers found after being alone for well over a couple of hours.

They did all that in a couple hours? What would they have done the next day? Cannibalism?

Whatever happened to self-reliance? Prior planning? Education?

They went in at 6:00 PM and called for assistance at 10:30 PM? Based on the clothing choices I am going to guess this wasn't a hiking trip. Possibly drugs or heavy alcohol involved. Is there a local school they could have been doing some sort of fraternity event for?

I figured it was the fact that I've watched too many episodes of Justified lately that made me want to say that. So I refrained.

    But I sure thought it.

Well, I just don't know if I should LOL or just shake my head. I have seen day hikers without the most simple of equipment ( water, raingear etc.) and just kind of shke my head and carry on. Last year I was hiking a section of the AT. ( Tinkers too 311) I had stayed at a shelter just north of 311. A group pass the shelter heading up to McAfee Knop at about 5:00pm with no packs. I tried to tell them that it would dark soon to no avail. At about 10:00pm I could hear them trying to walk out, no flashlights, I had a small campfire going and got their attention. I made them as comfortable as possible and shared some food and coffee, put them on the shelter and then walked out with them in the morning.

I have walked out of there many nights without flashlights. Just walk out by way of the fire road. It could not have been more than 2 miles to route 311.

Definitely doesn't look like Mensa material to me.

Hey now! Kentucky has no monopoly on that. Maine has its fair share of Einsteins too.
