2016 Thru-Hike Registry

Approach Trail shall be done

Last fall was a LASHer (long-ass section hiker), heading SOBO hiked from Harper's Ferry to Damascus. Oh-so-ready. There is a slight chance I'll change it up and head Southbound, but we'll see!

First post, first time committing to thru-hike to the internet community!

Direction: Was thinking NOBO, but now the head start from Harpers Ferry is sounding pretty tempting. Don't need the crowds!

Mostly geeking out about gear at the moment, just bought my first postal scale (!!!). Incredibly psyched to get out there and start this life-altering experience! I'll be going solo with my German Shepherd mix Hooyip, who's accompanied me on many miles at my current job as a trail worker.

I currently don't have a trail name. I'll let you guys decide that for me. I'm a nobo hiker and I plan to start at the beginning of March. I'm not really sure if I'll do the approach trail or not. I am also looking for some partners so please contact me if anyone is interested!

I could be wrong, but I think your start date and plan of doing the trail in 120 days puts you in Vermont during mud season... don't take my comment as canon, but it is worth checking up on. That wouldn't be very fun

So I am just throwing this out there. I see a lot of talk on these forums about the effect the Bryson inspired movie "A Walk in the Woods" is going to have on the numbers next year. I would like to float the idea that it is being over estimated. I saw the movie. Let me say it's no "Wild". It's more like a comedy.

When I saw "Wild" I wanted to grab a bag and go after. It made the discovery the trail provides the focus. "A Walk in the Woods" did not do that. It made me laugh.... but I felt no pull to hit the trail, and I've been planning the AT for about a year now.

I'm sure there will be an increase, there is every year right? But I doubt we are looking at anything close to the PCT problem "Wild" caused.
