My hiking plans for the year are coming together, just a little more complicated than I expected. In order to accommodate a friend's visit from Denmark, my brother's wedding, and an opportunity to spend a week in Banff National Park up in Canada, I'm going to start SOBO from around Front Royal, VA and be somewhere between Catawba and Damascus when I take a few days off to hang out with my Danish friend. After that, I'm going to be heading up to New York to hike NOBO to Katahdin. From there, back to NY to hike SOBO as far as I can before my brother's October wedding, getting shuttled around the section I'll have already completed back in June/July. After the wedding, I'll hopefully be back on trail SOBO for any remaining miles in VA and everything else between me and Springer! Ideally finishing right before Thanksgiving.
It's all very convoluted, but I should be walking every mile of whiteblazed trail within a span of about 6 months. I assume that means I can call it a thru-hike!
Like a lot of us, plans change, and although I have posted twice since last October, I can now say with certainty that I will be stepping off from Springer on Tuesday 5/10. Not doing the Approach, as I did that some years back.
I have convinced myself that this date is the absolute sweet spot of start dates, just enough company, without the crowds of March & April. See my mid May mates shortly... golfhiker
"How can something this hard be so much fun".
Hey all. I almost forgot to mention that my ol buddy and hiking partner of many years, Chin Music (MEGA 2013) will be with me at the start, likely about 10 days or so. This will be fun!
