Hey guys! Should I get the $150 40° down bag and then make a quilt for the winter or the $287 15° bag.....

What kind of bag do you have now? Can you use it like a quilt over the summer (the $150 is a long FY) and can you swing the $287? If so, you cant go wrong with the 15 deg down bag at 34oz. My brother has it and loves it. You will definitely want a high quality warm bag for your thru hike.

I have two heeeaaaavy car camping sort of bags. One is like 20° the other is a basic summer bag. Walmart quality.

I was originally thinking I'd make two (down) quilts. Summer and winter.... But it would be nice if I didn't have to go down that dark and unknown path.

If it were me and I had the money I would get the quality bag for winter when it could very well save your life. You can be a bit more conservative in the summer but it can still get chilly in the mountains. Depending on the weight/ compressibility of your summer walmart bag you could use the Montbell as a quilt.
