I've had good luck with an Oxo brand. The display detaches a bit so you can read it with larger items on the scale pad. Weighs items up to 5 lbs with resolution to about 3 grams. Cost about $30. Lots of others out there, they all work and cost about the same. Some cheaper ones available on Ebay.

I bought a simple kitchen one from Walmart. Digital display in ounces or grams, tare button, and a removable bowl on top that comes in handy sometimes. Paid about $20.00 a few years ago.

If you are measuring small items, then you need an accurate scale. I found that a kitchen/food scale are more accurate than a postal scale. I bought a 7000gram food scale, the KD-7000 by My Weigh back in 2008 and have been happy with it. It has the resolution of 1 gram/0.1oz. Amazon still sells it. Check out what Walmart and Target sell. Make sure you look at the accuracy/resolution listed. If it isn't listed, don't bother with it.
