5 days doesn't give you much time. The bus from DC to Front Royal is your best option. If you can make it to Waynesboro, you can get a shuttle over to Charlottesville for either a bus or train back...

It's possible it was part of the AT at one time, or it could just be a misplaced label. Google can pick up data from old maps which haven't been updated in some time.

You left it there nearly a month ago? Good luck. Gear left at shelters is considered abandoned. If it isn't still there (and there is a good chance it is), it's been removed and disposed of.

Leggings are better to sleep in then rain pants, so I'd go with the leggings, regardless.

I have used a Dickie work shirt for years. It's 65/35 polyester/cotton. Just enough cotton to make it comfortable and durable, but still dries out reasonably quickly. It's also reasonably wind proof....

It's suppose to be getting nippy about now, but it's not. It's going to be in the 80's most of next week. I have a feeling early September will be a lot like what late August is suppose to be like....

No, it's just common sense. On a back woods road like that you have no idea if or when a critter might jump out of the woods in front of you. Or you might come to a road hazard and not have time...

I would think the shuttler is "first hand knowledge".

I doubt either of these roads are maintained. We had a harsh winter and it doesn't take much wash out these roads and make them impassable.
