I dont get the irritation at all, actually sounds like a sense of entitlement. I rented one of those cabins 15 years ago and would have been sorely disappointed if a bunch of hikers had crowded...
So I did about 34 miles, two nights out. Parked at Thornton Gap and hiked to Swift Run, then hitched back to car. Had a great time, first time back in the mtns in 3.5 years. Since I was on a weekend...
Thanks guys.
Hey guys,
Ive been overseas for three years but have have a business trip in Northern Virginia in late Sept/ early Oct. I have one weekend where I think I can squeeze an overnighter on the trail....
Bite back!
Coffe advice from a guy named "Muddy Waters"?! Bahahaha! awesome
Actually I only drink black coffee too. I live in Okinawa now and the Japanese have lots of instant coffee choices. Not too bad.
Oorah Leatherneck!
Looking for a recommendation for an overnight hike near hot springs/max patch area. Looking at approx 10 miles out, camp 10 miles back....or a loop..etc. we are looking for a challenge.
thought...
"average people, extraordinary trail" by Mark Allen. Excellent read, combines advice on planning, prepartation with a great narrative of his journey. If I had to recommend one book that would be it
I concur... I hiked for years, starting as a teen, by myself and thoroughly enjoyed it. Then started taking my son backpacking when he was 8... Was even better...he's 13 now and is getting stronger...
Hey brother, I'm a backpacker here at LeJeune and am a native of western NC. I've done the Neusiok Trail a couple of times, good quick trip to test out gear and field craft but not very challenging....
Hey man I use this pack at work (I am an active duty Marine, infantry). I personally don't like the pack but it is extremely durable and spacious. I bought a the Gregory Baltoro 65 last year and...
Spirit Bear, I hear you when you speak about experiencing God in nature. In the Bible, Romans 1:20 say "for the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being...
I have the Bushbudy Ultra...check it out, it's great for both cooking and the "camp fire feel", I love it.

In my humble opinion if you wear insect repellant while "thru hiking" you have insulated yourself from your environment and therefore weren't really there......in the same vein slackpacking is NOT...
Brother,
Similar curcumstances here: I am an infantryman here in eastern NC (though a Marine at LeJeune). Have been hiking/backpacking for years but just took my wife on her first backpacking...
Thanks Crockett, but I am going to go with the 65...and am going to wait a little later in the season to buy it.
I appreciate everyone's input!
thanks for the feedback, good stuff to chew on.
Good point about fit versus features. I spent about two hours being fitted at REI and have just about convinced myself to get the Baltoro; still...
I am looking at the Gregory Baltoro. Nice pack, may features I like.
Would like feedback if you own one/ have used one. Also would you recommend the 65 or 75 for use on a thru hike? Part of me...
I've been a Marine infantryman for 18 years and have hiked the ALICE pack many, many miles. I have the goal and dream of thru hiking the AT when I retire from this career. I have a large ALICE pack...
SHAME, SHAME, SHAME. Could you get away with it? Probably. Is it right? Absolutely not.
To do this one must lack character. A thru hike is a goal and dream which should not be financed by a...
I will be in Northern Va for work for a few days, but will have time to squeeze in a weekend hike.
Can anyone recommend a good hike for an overnighter? I'm ok with an out and back. I'm looking...
Virgil, wow thanks for the note. I wouldn't have thought they would grip well in the stream, I'll give them a try on the next trip...if I can just get over them hanging off my pack like it's the...
which do you take on your hike, crocs or sandal? why?
I like crocs because they slip on easily, are very durable; but they are kind of big and chuncky. my slight OCD doesn't like them strapped to...
