Terrible Idea,
I started February 2, 2014 and it was terrible all the way to Damascus. Freezing water bottles, snow, ice, closed hostels and whatnot.
Had to use map + compass several times...
Gurrrrrrrlie - I'm scared.

Ha! We were talking about you when we ran down that mountain to dodge the storm. Hoping you would make it down there safely.
The storm was rather gentle to us but we hit quite a few blowdowns the...
Just make sure the tuna is in a can.

You won't survive the 100 mile wilderness at your pace. It's a heinous stretch of trail that needs to be hiked doing 8-10 miles a day.
Gnahaha

I'm currently in Etna, NH so pretty far ahead of the bubble. Still there are people catching up to every other week.
Just give it some time. You will run into some nobos. They are going to hike...
Overmountain is a barn with holes and cracks in the walls. Also it has a lot of nails sticking out of the ground and is mice infested.
The sleeping platforms in front of the shelter are pretty...
I was just there a couple of days ago. The shelter is one of the nicer ones in Vermont.
The sleeping area inside is pretty beat up though so you might want to watch where you put your inflatable...
Used frogg toggs rain pants in the winter time. They did the trick.
Ditched them in march in Virginia in favor of my MYOG rain kilt. It also doubles as ground cloth for the footbox of my sleeping...
But Lone Wolf,
they told Joe and me we wouldn't survive the winter. Somehow we are still trucking though.

Yeah, I don't know why he is pushing it today. Very easy to turn your ankle, break a leg or even worse out there in these conditions.
Guess I will catch up with him at the Fontana Hilton anyway....
Maybe two inches at the center. I don't know about the higher elevation. I can tell you that the climb down to the NOC in the snow was pretty awkward though.

Im at the NOC atm. Started at Springer at 2/2. All I can say is: its cold, its snowy and there are only a handful of nobos on the trail. Don't think because you hiked in the snow a couple of days you...
The season is important too.
If you cherry pick your time frame you can save a lot of weight.
That is probably the reason why you won't find a lot of ultra lighters in deep winter.
Backpacking forums are a bubble.
Once you hit the trail, you'll notice that only the minority of hikers actually have a base weight around 15 lbs.
Make sure you two are comfortable with your...
What happened to the HYOH-thing?

Think temperatures just above freezing and wind driven rain all day.
These kind of conditions suck the heat out of your body really quickly.
Bring good rain gear and don't forget to be fully...
Yeah, I had a look at the weather forecast today. It sure looks like I'm in for a very cold start.
I ended up adding a fleece jacket, microspikes and boiled mittens to my gear list. That messed up...
Its only 7 days for me.
Feels like waiting in line at the rollercoaster. The ride just happens to be a little longer :)
You might want to check out the maps postholer.com offers (link).
They have maps for southern, central and northern states of the trail. Each book is ~7 oz, divided into 23 sections.
That's a...
Its also a very addictive hobby..
Since August I made a gazilion of stuffsacks, cozys, two tarps, two mids, a rain poncho, a rain kilt, bug bivy, pertex bivy, rain mittens, VBL liner and rain...
I use a WM Ultralite 20 Large and a MYOG 30°F Down Quilt. Better to have synthetic on the outside though.
Added some straps and buckles to keep the quilt on top of the sleeping bag and made sure...
