I have been using pre cut lengths of Amsteel cord for my tarp dodge line.
Self protection starts with mindset. Men, as well as women seem to be woefully unprepared for a sudden crisis. Adequate means of protection are available, and there is no legitimate reason these...
Dan, it’s the section running from where the AT crosses I-81 and going north to where it crosses I-77. The family moved into the area in the mid 1700’s.
I started hiking sections of the AT Back in the fifties, as a lad. The trail followed the ridge of a mountain on our family land in SW Virginla. I have lived in Florida my entire life, but was...
I have portioned out #10 cans of MH for years. I use vac seal bags, usually getting 8 per can. They reconstitute right in the bag with boiling water. I carry a little gem spring clip to seal the...
a tip of the hat, for all the hard work. :)
I hike Etoniah often. While familier with the Etonia Rosemary, I have not seen a big foot yet.
After a few days, I sure miss having a Cold Beer at the end of the day.
it's always a little off putting for folks to be snide on a hiking forum. Geez
V, don't worry about your car being parked at Pat's Island. I have left my old 4Runner there many times, with never...
While I like a good 100 oz bladder, I don't always fill and carry them. If I know water is easily available, I'll go with the Platypus roll up 1 ltr bottles, and fill the bladder if I know a long...
if things go wrong, you can always just eat it.
I am still using an old Swedish Military Trangia alky stove. A bit heavy, but it is dead nuts reliable, wind proof, and I am used to it.
I carry HEET to burn in it.
There are quite a number of us 'trail rats' that live in and around the Gainesville area.
A get together would be fun, and I am sure I'd learn a lot as well.
Today, I was hiking Etoniah State...
Conditions were great. Temp was about 94 that day, with a humidity of 50%+. That makes for some enervating heat.
Good hat, lots of water, pacing yourself works, as always.
Conditions on...
This is almost the exact same area I showed in my previous picture. The undergrowth is coming back strong, but I fear it will be years before there are trees again to shade the path....
I hiked Juniper Springs to Pat's Island this past week. Weather was HOT, but with a good full brim hat, and lots of water, it was not too bad.
I did not see anyone on the trail....
We wound up just staying on Walker Mountain for a couple of days and nights. Did not hike that far, mostly just sat around and chatted, catching up on what we have missed with each other in the past...
probably not a gray wolf, but there have been some red wolves re introduced into parts of NC and other areas in the East.
Best bet is that what you saw though, was a large Coyote.
while I have hiked a pretty fair bit of the AT, I have never had the slightest desire to do a thru hike.
Never had the time, and now that I do, I don't have the desire.
One stripped MRE each, and one MH meal each.
Fresh fruit, trail mix, Cliff bars, coffee, tea and hot cider.
I've only been around a few years, but I have no problems with the site, or the folks.
Good information, excellent reviews of being on the trail, and insight into gear usage.
You may well be right. :) He has lived in Vegas for about 6 years now, but prior to that, was living in the Philippines, Japan, and Virginia.
He is an accomplished hiker and mountain guy.
looking also at cutting some of the distance out, say starting off highway 42 near Ceres.
All three of us are in good shape. Older Brother climbs/hikes in the mountains of Nevada and California....
I have hiked the area in Virginia many times in the past, but it has been a few years now since I was able to get up there.
My two brothers, both in their mid 60's, want to try a bit of the trail....
