...and I'd like to do that piece of trail. It's too far out to commit and that 20 mile day has me a bit freaked out, but keep me in the loop.

I've used both aluminum and carbon fiber and the Gossamer Gear CF are BY FAR the best choice. Never have I comer close to breaking one and they are super light. I could never go back.
...for New Year's. Think there's any water on the trail? Anyone been thru here lately that can report?
