Thinking about hiking along the Appalachian Trail using a thru-hiker permit in October. Are the shelters usually full at this time? I'd much rather use my tent than stay in a shelter.

That's awesome Salty! Good lookin' kid!
Thanks for the update. I'll make sure to pay Cash when dealing with hostels and their ilk.
Anyone been out yet to confirm? I don't want to carry a bunch of water, but I want to make sure all of the listed sources are legit. I have Guthook and AWOL.
I'm loyal to MC and Hiawassee is just one of those places you have to visit. Every time. So the amenities at the Budget Inn are my choice.
That's a ___'s Gap move.
That Mora Bushcraft he linked isn't full tang, but almost, and it can baton with no problem. Will it break? Maybe if you're a novice and use a rock.
Nothing wrong with some low hanging fruit on the trail. It might even get a nibble now 'n then.
Hike Naked Day is the reason I carry a two person tent. If you're well endowed like me, you'll always have a few new "friends" in the days following. Nothing like a zero day romp in unfamiliar bush.
Just carry this. Not only can you craft bushes.. you can craft furniture, vehicles, and electronics.

Just put the rock in a sack. Why bother tying rope around a rock?
This this the kind of stuff that qualifies as 'stupid light' in my opinion. The 3.6oz the large raincover will help prevent your gear/pack from absorbing water. If it does absorb water, it'll be a...
You can get this just about anywhere. Just make sure you've got soap/water and you're not touching anything some filthy dred-laden bum hiker has touched.

I just started reading this book. That part about the drums and voices was cool. The copperhead mistaking that kid's big toe for food was crazy.
The lightest t-shirt I own is a Mountain Hardwear Wicked Lite short sleeve (SS) @ $27. It's about 4.8oz. Next up is a Columbia SS at 5.2oz @ $12. It's surprising sometimes how much fabric can weigh....

I carry a 3L water reservoir and filter directly into it with a Mini and fast-fill adapter. I can empty a 2L platypus into it in a minute or so.
Someone call Mark Zuckerberg and tell him to toss .0000000001% of his net worth to update the Doyle and keep it running for the next 100 years.
I have the mug too. I've read stories about the cup falling out of the sleeve while hanging off a pack. I put a tiny piece of 3M Dual Lock on it and have never had an issue.
I've got 50ft of guyline, a caribiner, and a rock sack for PCT style hanging. It's almost 5oz and I really would like to toss it and sleep with my food too, but there are too many warnings recently...
Interesting you quote him a shirt that bugs can't bite through, but suggest a tarp that ticks and other bugs can freely attack you in while sleeping. :D
Where did you find a Smart Water bottle for 0.4oz? The lightest I've found is 0.9oz?
You don't need 2L of water. You can carry 1L and fill up along the way. Look at the guide book.

I got my ass kicked long ago on the AT (and other trails), and barring injury or emergency, I had no question that I could complete a thru-hike. Time away from responsibility is the biggest factor...
