this is a section hike. To be considered a thru hike, the people would have to have gone from va to Katahding and then flip south (Katahdin to VA) in same year.. ideally same trip.

you might be better off taking concord trailways to Concord, NH (frequent busses) and then trying to get a ride from there. But that of course is touch and go as well.
and I just checked mountwashington.org. The winds on the summit of Mt Washington are now as of almost noon time steady at 111 mph and gusting to 127 and it's likely to get worse before it gets...

you are giving your self two weeks from Hanover, NH. Getting to Grafton Notch Maine is very ambitious and if the weather does not cooporate it could be almost impossible. I strongly recommend you...
this question really can't be answered without knowing what part of the AT you plan to hike and thus what the terrain will be like. In Shenandoha National Park 15-20 mpd is realistic. In the white...
average day for thru hiker on AT (at least in my case): awake by 6 am if not earlier. Get dressed, packup, cook and eat breakfast, leave camp by 8 am or sooner. Hike all morning. Stop when I want....
I read somewhere once a quote and don't remember exactly how it goes. It is something along the lines of people can change their attitude or the trail will change it for them. Those who don't leave...
hmm the Doyle.. seemed to me that most hikers LOVE the Doyle because it is a cheap hotel on top of a bar. and boy do these hikers love drinking beer! Trouble for me is--besides that I am not into...
hike all 280 miles of Maine on a broken foot? that has happened?
Where along the AT are the major points that NB thru hikers get off the trail ? Here I am referring to those who abort their through hikes, not those leaving trail temporarily.
What comes to mind...
@Themidlifehiker: You are correct in that thru hiking the AT successfully is more a mental than a physical challenge.
Here are some questions to ask yourself before starting off from Springer...
If Alabamians want their own long distance trail.. let them build a separate trail that connects to the Southern terminus. I do agree.. the trail should be extended 8 miles south to Amicolala...
I wonder if starting TOO early could cause the hike to be longer due to more time needed off trail due to inclement weather such as snow and ice.
If you truly loved winter backpacking.. then it wouldn't suck would it? and if it does suck, how could you love ot?
I can only hazard a guess on this. It might be that many of those early northbounders (leaving Springer in early February) do want to avoid crowds but don't realize that just because they are in the...
this post is patently ridiculous!!! You are going to be hiking 2200 miles and gaining more elevation than the height of MT Everest many times over and you are worried about a 8 extra miles and a...
as far as getting to the AT from Lake Placid, NY... well you "cahn't get theyah frm heah!"
I suggest you hike the Northville Lake Placid Trail. Start at the northern terminus in Lake Placid and...

Anyone who can't go camping without access to wifi..should just stay home and not go camping. This is so ridiculous it makes my head spin. camping is to get away from it all, not to bring it all...
it may be possible to thru hike on as little as 2500 dollars. I say maybe. I would very strongly suggest that you some how save up to have 4000$ or more. Allow your self the occassional hotel night...
DelQ from Wildcat Mountain northward in mid-May expect bugs to be ferocious at lower elevations, not much of a problem up high. Instead, when you are up high (i.e. over 3500 feet) you may be post...
the 100 mile wilderness in Maine. No other section of the AT can touch it for its beauty and wildness!
those southerners don't really know mountains until they get to Northern New England. This is where thru hikers really earn their stripes!
It is really too bad that Connecticut can't or won't allocate the funds to keep beautiful places like Macedonia Brook State Park open for 2017. I was born and raised in Connecticut and have very fond...
