Great question. Hank IV has given excellent advice, that is, to consider your spare clothing as part of your sleep system. For spring and fall section hikes, I carry a warm bag and pad, and the...
Transitioning from silk, you may want to consider 150-175 weight wool. When base layers are needed, I use 150 weight zip-neck from a company known for breaking ice. It was professionally treated...
Added True lemon packets. The extra "acid" really woke up old recipes, ie salmon, evoo/mayo, couscous and broccoli. Used chicken bone broth with chicken, rice, peas and cashews. Brought back...
Have done 1st, and the 1st of the 2nd. If you do 2nd, you might check Brushy Mt Outpost hours.
LOL from a fellow lol (little old lady):D I'd definitely wear my stompy 40-yr-old Vasque Sundowners with skirts and dresses, if that darn trail hadn't made my feet too big!!
Wool underwear, give it a try even in heat. The breathability is key. With a wool sports bra, it's taken multiple washings to soften and remove the itch factor, so stick with a favorite. Hiking...
Thank you, creative Whiteblazers. I, too, find my original heading often needs adjusting once leaving the trail, and needed more than a compass heading. Something quick to deploy and retrieve. ...
Sectioned from Fox Creek to Atkins over Labor Day 2019, and the Barn was closed. Parked at Relax Inn for a very small fee, and got a shuttle from son Ben for a very fair price. Resupplied at the...

So glad that the procedures went well, and that you are up and outside. You have given of yourself in a way few could comprehend. I am grateful for the trails that have contributed to the...
It's one hour from the campgrounds to Hot Springs NC. Spend some quality time soaking together in the hot spring-fed tubs. Now, isn't that better than public showers?
Two other choices: the historic General Francis Marion Hotel and the budget Travel Inn. I stayed at both over Labor Day, and would recommend. Really enjoyed my stay in Marion!

The tragedy of Stronghold's death is overwhelmed by the victory of his life. Rest in peace, Ron.
A tragedy for all- families, friends, the AT community. The victim bravely called SOS, and, by giving his location, he helped law enforcement apprehend the perpetrator before anyone else was hurt. ...
Pizza roll-up: tortilla, mozzarella stick, pepperoni stick, sundried tomatoes.
Hope you get a chance to observe the fireflies. My husband and I saw them at Campsite #113 on June 8, 2016. Like viewing a total solar eclipse, they are "other worldly."
Thanks for sharing. Any time on the AT is an adventure!
Beautiful pictures! Guessing a Canada lily. Thanks for sharing- section hikers rock
Sewed a flower applique on my hiking hat and wear hiking skirts whenever tick threat is at a minimum. Wool tops in bright colors help keep it sweet. Clean is beautiful, so I spend the time on...
The cub scouts liked boil-in-a-bag omelets. Embellish with cheese, bacon bits etc. Easy!
Excellent. Thanks for sharing.

BonBon,
Your trail journal was so honest and inspiring. I am glad that, through this article, others will hear your story and learn of your philanthropy. Best wishes!
Did this section Aug 6-7. No water at campsite north of Little Hump, but Overmountain Shelter source was flowing, as was Doll Flats and Massive stone wall. It was the berries! Literally,...
