I looked and couldn’t find this, but anyone know, on a clear day, how many miles in the distance you can see from the top of Max Patch? Amazing views this past Wednesday!
Thanks!
Thanks for all the advice. We found a shuttle, but couldn’t obtain reserve the four spots we needed at the sites. I spoke with the Backcounty office (very nice by the way), and couldn’t really find a...
Yeah, that sounds like a good plan as well. I don’t think we’ll get on the trail until around 2 ish which is why the short first day.
No doubt a lot of ifs. Hoping to make it happen and that a few more shuttles will start operating towards the end of the month, and we can get our backcountry permits.
Looking at doing this section towards the end of June and would love any feedback on the itinerary and any info on current conditions-
-NFG to Mt. Collins Shelter 4.7
-Mt Collins to Derrick Knob...
I guess in general, I just wanted to know if there was a time frame when cancelling a shuttle was acceptable. Especially because at some point in time I'd like to use the same person again to...
is there an appropriate amount of time you should give when canceling a shuttle?
Had to cance a shuttle I arranged for this eeekend, and just wondering if having cancelations is part of running a...
According to an NBC report ticks can infect the host with this in as little as 15 minutes, compared to an hour for Lyme.....
Being from Houston, the "heat" in the mountains shouldn't bother you, it's the ups and downs that you'll notice! The restaurant at NOC is open 8-8, as are the stores there. The downhill into NOC...
I wear my glasses because I don't want any number of issues with putting in/taking out contacts on the trail. Though with extended wear, you wouldn't necessarily have those issues. Just go with makes...
Definitely plenty of places to hammock! We used Jeff at Hike Inn, and everything worked out well transportation wise. Could also try calling The Cabin in the Woods. Enjoy!
...
Just did that last week. The shuttle from the dam to NOC was around $50. The climb out of NOC, especially as a section hiker is long (3+ hrs to the shelter for us). Like mentioned above, a few small...
Thanks-great information! Plan on leaving the car at the dam so we'll have to hike on to it!

Is there much water to be found between Locust Cove and Brown Fork Gap? Doesn't show any on the guide.
That sounds like what we are thinking of doing as well. Just really depends on how the first day goes I guess. Hopefully some one has some experience with the sites Locust and Cable Gap. The last...
Are there any camping stops right after Chetah-does anyone know how the site at Locust Cove Gap is?
I've just sectioned hiked the trail up to NOC to this point, and really should have asked what this section is like compared to the previous sections. 2.5 is about what we normally do for 30 miles,...
About how many days to do this section? Is ten miles reasonable the first day, and has anyone camped at Locust Cove Gap?
Many thanks!
For the adventure and to do things I haven't done before, and to conqure a fear or two. Sleep out in the middle of know where with nothing between me and the evils of the woods was a huge deal ! :) ...
You could do it but why? Hiking that fast would be like taking a cruise but never leaving your cabin! There's so much to see along the way. But, Hike your own hike!
Always take a couple of the bic minis, and put them in a small plastic Baggie to help keep them dry, and maybe a few matches as back-ups. Though if two lighters fail, I'm probably in trouble! :)
I agree with folks who posted about shelters being noisy... the last time I stayed in a shelter, it was packed, and the two hikers on either side of me were snoring up a storm, but it poured that...
I've stayed in shelters outside of the thru hiking season, and for the most part have found them mice free and clean. Pretty sure the mice migrate north with the bubble, so we've always missed them!
With everything being equal, and looking at the first day only being able to hike for a few hours to a half day, which way should we hike this section?
Many thanks for your opinions.
