Any problem parking at Newfound Gap and getting a shuttle down to Fontana Dam the first Monday in June? Want to do that section with my teenage son.
I'll start with the book. Excellent suggestions. Thanks!
Two things are coming to and end for me: sleeping on the ground, and endless obsessive gear research. After 950 miles of AT section hikes, I'm ready to get off the ground. Approaching 50 years...
Just to close the loop on this... I completed the hike according to plan. Day 1: Hot Springs to Log Cabin Road, Day 2: to Sam's Gap, Day 3 to Uncle Johnny's. Day 2 was indeed very difficult. I got...
Thanks! That's what I want to hear!
We have a private cabin. But yeah, I would be sleeping in my hiking clothes. Eyes open, shoes on, out the door. Eat on the go. I've done this a couple times.
I've done similar itineraries unsupported. This trip will be fun with car friends and good eats. As for daylight, like I said earlier, I'm walking at 5 a.m. Sun up around 6:30 I would think... I...
Especially in June ;-). 10 by 10. 20 by 4. 30 by 9. Slow and steady wins the race. It always comes out to close to 2 MPH for me (including breaks).
I took speed hiking to mean covering more than average/normal/typical in a day. Since we tend to measure AT miles in days. 25-30 miles per day is speedier than typical.
Your logistical...
I thought it was the Trail Running and SPEED HIKING forum ;-). I'll average my 2 mph. A 30 mile day is 15 hours of hiking. Call it 16 with breaks. I don't hike faster, just longer. I've got some...
I BACKpacked several 30 milers IN VA. Did 34 from Chestnut Ridge (or is it Chester) to Jenny's Knob. Not quite 30 but did Damascus to Thomas Knobb. Couple others can't think of at moment, would...
Probably not getting on trail until lunchtime day 1 so 16 is probably best I can shoot for... As for night hiking -- I don't like to hike after sundown but love it BEFORE sun up....
I've been off the trail for a couple of years but looking at continuing my section hiking this summer where I left off -- Hot Springs to Erwin (or reverse). I'm thinking
Day 1: 16.3 miles - 273.7...
I havn't seen anything. Only Instagram. Maybe I spoke too soon!
Bean is legit. Camps had some magic too. They are both superhuman.
If it weren't for Stringbean we'd all be going ape **** over this incredible hike. Bad timing for Camps! I hope he feels personally fulfilled.
Insane indeed.
He's 6'4'', lean, and strong. He's 10-15 years younger than Annish and Speedgoat. From what I can tell, he's the youngest/fittest/strongest guy to attempt this thing. He hiked 3-4 mph for 16-20...
No Instagram or mapalist pin for a day or two now... Hope he's alright.
I think his only significant delay was the Kennebec River Ferry, but there were a couple of times he had to race to get to a resupply location before it closed. Stuff like that. Oh, come to think...
My opinion is that accepting magic and/or mooching is within the current FKT self-supported guidelines, BUT, if I were attempting the self-supported FKT (which will never occur) or was advising...
It's actually a "self-supported" hike. Unsupported means you take everything you are going to need (all food) and don't do any resupplying while under way.

And a spreadsheet that needs mileposts entered. Ughhh ;-)
