Thank you for the feedback!
I'm considering a weekend hike TN91 north into Damascus this fall. Now that the camping restriction is lifted, would appreciate feedback from anyone who has camped this section recently. I expect...
Thanks! We might wait a bit longer for that section to make sure things are ok, but glad to hear it’s open again.
Sharing this question from another thread…..I’m seeing conflicting info online…..does anyone have updates on the availability (and wisdom) of camping between 321 and Damascus? I’ve been avoiding this...
I’m seeing conflicting info online…..does anyone have updates on the availability (and wisdom) of camping between 321 and Damascus? I’ve been avoiding this section, but seems like its open again.
thanks, everyone! much appreciated :)
Good point. I saw that and thought I might cut it short and make 91 an endpoint. I seem to be reading more reasons not to hike it than in favor of - and its such a nice route! I appreciate the...
Is this still a reasonable section to hike in October given bear activity, trash, etc? If so, is water an issue at this time of year? TIA, WB!
Thanks for the insights and pics! Most helpful (a few a little scary). 😳. I’ll heed the advice and start off with a single night in a section I know pretty well. Hope to see you out there! 🥾🥾🥾❄️☃️
I’ve always wanted to hike in winter, but worry about not being able to find the blazes in snow. Blizzard scenario aside, how easy is it to find the trail in winter? I really want to try, but don’t...
I used Zoosk and found the love of my life. My profile told my story and passion for hiking the AT. Early emails and texts weeded out the glampers from the backpackers until I found the real thing....
I'm new to winter hiking and have only two solo weekend trips under my belt. I usually hike spring-fall when there are lots of other hikers on the trail, so I could use some advice. When you winter...
Sounds like fun! I'd love to join you if I'm in town. :)
+1 for Laughing Heart!
We had a hognose when I was a kid.....that's exactly what they did. When they are threatened, they hiss. If that doesn't work, they pretend to be a Cobra. They also play dead (quite funny). They...
Two years ago near Lost Mountain shelter, we were snug in our tents after a hard rain when a hiker came down the trail. I assumed s/he was looking for a pitch site because the light from a headlamp...
Excellent post, JB. Well said.
Given the type of filter this system uses.....Does anyone treat their water after filtering for viruses and such? If so, with what?
Gorgeous section! We travelled it in July several times and had no probs finding water. We carried 3L/day to be safe and didn't have any issues.
The thought that this bear went after the boy is terrifying. Tent or hammock, the bear knew what he wanted and tried to take it. Last summer at Siler Bald shelter, we hung near the shelter. a...
welcome back, JustBill! I always enjoy your posts - and this one is no exception. Thanks for the fresh perspective and encouragement to get out there and keep the adventure going.
We hiked Ga to NOC the first week of August. Most of the trip was wonderful. It's summer, so you expect the heat. What I didn't expect was wild flowers up to your armpits filled with...
Gorgeous, yes.....easy, no. That's a great section...worth the time to enjoy all it has to offer. Damascus to Atkins is about 75 miles, lots of knee busting up hills. Good luck, you'll love that...
Thanks, everyone. I will take your advice and do both. I'd like to see 19e NOBO and end in Damascus, but I'd also like to see 19E sobo and see those views. Happy trails!
How's this route for a six day hike? We typically hike 10-15 miles a day and the topo looks pretty good in this area for a nice week of hiking. I see 321 to Wilbur Dam Rd is closed to overnights...
