Bees. I'm allergic. Even carrying epipen and benadryl, I don't want to be a day away from help.
A somewhat distant second is people. Specifically those who harrass and or assault other people.

I posted ages ago, but after much negotiation with my husband, I am now just doing a month or so section hike, Harper's Ferry SOBO to Erwin.
Not sure when I'll start, but probably between mid...
Big bald and beauty spot have nice views. Unaka mtn has my favorite forest in this section. Terrain from iron to unaka is fairly tame, though of course you will be climbing from Cherry gap shelter...
We've parked overnight and all day at Sam's gap numerous times without trouble.

I've been to the fjords. As beautiful as the pictures are, they don't compare to being there in person. Go.

Edit: only doing 4-5 weeks this year. It's either that or end a marriage. Going SOBO from Harper's ferry to Erwin, starting between mid April and mid May

I ran most of that section Sunday before last (Sam's to big bald and back), I didn't think the overgrowth was anything unusual for July. In fact it was clear that someone had been through with a...
OK, someone earlier said "town is dangerous". Surely that's a little over the top. What towns? All towns? Any thoughts?

I live in Erwin, hike a lot between Erwin and roan mtn...it's a nice section, a little higher elevation so a wee bit cooler, usually. But if you are definitely doing hot springs to Erwin, last year...
Funny! I actually just finished the whw yesterday. Exactly 4 days. It was beautiful, tricky weather though. Posh camping too! The trail itself wasn't terrifically challenging, but the scenery is...
I'm a new poster too, as well as a beginning backpacker, and I've been pleasantly surprised by the helpful, tactful, and plentiful responses to the few posts I've made. Far better than my typical...
I believe my original curiosity has been satisfied. Didn't mean to start a mathematical argument ;)
Thanks for all the replies though.
The spring at cherry gap shelter past unaka mtn is delicious and flowing!!!
Interesting! Although I'm sure it didn't go down this way, it's funny picturing some dude walking the whole trail pushing a wheel.
This is a question purely out of curiosity. How many off-trail miles might one expect to walk getting to and from towns, taking side trails for water, etc. Surely it adds up to far more than 2189....
x2. It took me two years to go from shoulder length to about mid-shoulder blade length so I'm hesitant to cut it anytime soon.
Braids allow me to more comfortably go days without washing and help...
Trail name: ???
Direction: little flip, lotsa flop (Erwin south, then Erwin north)
Est. Start: mid-April
Approach trail: not sure
This has been in the works since 2000. Only now mentally and...
Awesome, ya'll! And if dark skin is a mosquito repellant then I will be mosquito cheetoes, because I'm as pasty as they get.
The crowds are a concern of mine, as well as a fear of it being too easy... I love me some hills and rocks. But then again it will be my first solo backpacking trip. Plus, Scotland!!!!
Thanks for...
Hey ya'll, I'm heading to Scotland in June, and a trip along the West highland way is on my list.
I've researched lots about the trail (or path, really, as much of it goes along old road ), but...
If you like beer or anything but fast food or BBQ forget about Erwin. Harsh, but I live here so I get to say so. Really, I like living here, but mainly because it's close to the trail and there's...
I'm saving up....going as soon as I can, hopefully 2016. Either going NOBO starting late April, or flip flopping Erwin to Springer, Erwin to Maine starting in early April
Well, good thing I ordered my tent yesterday :\
Wow! Thanks for the thorough, diverse, and helpful answers!
I'm definitely going to stick with using poles (see what I did there ;) because my knees are a problem.
This all definitely helps...
Wow! Thanks everyone for the helpful, thorough, and diverse answers. I definitely will stick with using poles (see what I did there ;) because my knees are quickly losing cartilage after years of...
