Myself and another LT SOBO hiker used the North Troy B&B to stay at the night before, and got a ride to within about a mile of the northern terminus the next morning, worked out great. Here's some...
Exactly... maybe an age thing for me, but there is a time of day range in the early/mid afternoon that my body gets lethargic no matter what my hiking speed/terrain/effort is, so many days if alone...
Yep, hoodies are so versatile, and are great for instant thermal control.
Better yet is a 1/4 zip hoodie, which I suppose most are anyway.
Cold hiking? All zipped up, sleeves down, hood up,...
Whoops... Last post meant to say "similar" to copper spur!
A tent that works for smaller tent spaces is nice on some trails,so I bought a BA tigerwall 2 last year for the PCT... Well, the hike didn't go far, but the tent is awesome, so ilar to the copper...
I didn't mean to make you sad, sorry!
The location is where the "normal" paint rock creek route to climb Cloud Peak branches off the Solitude trail, not too far past Misty Moon lake. Fabulous...
thanks LH! But no, I'm obligated for a Rx3 at the Grand Canyon with a bunch of pals for Saturday 3/27, our annual "fun fest", heading into NM just after that. Again, thanks!
Cool article, and it supports the point that GPS's are plenty accurate for not getting lost. What's a dozen meters?
One little tidbit: GPS accuracy does tend to be slightly worse the further...
Just curious... there doesn't seem to be any "CDT action" (or PCT, for that matter) on here, so I thought I might as well give a western trail a "bump".
I'm going to hit the CDT in late March...
We'll just have to disagree on the GPS accuracy thing, I've never had any of those issues with the apps I use, sorry. Guthook and Backcountry navigator have never failed to dial me in to within a...
Good stuff, thanks, I just might go with the DR Li in a year or two.
JUST in case you're homesick, here's a duplex pitched in what was (I think?) your stomping grounds (Cloud Peak wilderness)...
...
Yup, no need for anything else, no need on most hikes to even set a waypoint, as the trail is clearly visible on whatever app you're using (in most cases) and your position is a nice comforting...
Thanks for the fine, thorough review Dune!
My 4-5 year old Duplex, with the 0.74 oz spruce green DFC/Cuben (upgrade from the 0.51) weighs 22.3 ounces, including the guy lines but NOT...
No scrambling, section 1 is all decent trail, maybe a bit steep in the last mile to the river.
Have you considered the alternate start at the Indian Creek trailhead? It cuts off 2 miles, and...
I understand. So many less expensive options, including those el-cheapo Costco/etc jackets, which are pretty reasonable. My wife also endorses the Eddie Bauer ones.
I'm just really partial to...
Colorado Covid numbers are currently dropping nicely, still a long way to go, but as far as I know, most places are open with 50-75% capacity, depending on the county. I think Chaffee County is...
I just bought an Arctyrex Cerium, BEST warmth to weight of any down jackets I've owned, which include various Montbells and a MHW Ghost wisperer. All of the latter mentioned jackets are excellent,...
Yeah, with that heat-recirculation bar, a cozy would work as it helps retain the heat transferred down the bar. In my statement earlier that they don't do much assumed no bar, meaning no source of...
Cmoulder will have a more complete, tested answer, but my quick answer is that no, cozy's around cannisters don't help much, depending on conditions though.
The main reason the canister gets...
Agree 100%, and thanks cmoulder for all the other info on cannister stoves (lots of threads going on!).
FWIW, when I did all my stove/cannister testing about 10 years ago now (I was really trying...
The link was to show that the densities are quite different.
Gravity. Physics. Liquids with varying densities stratify. Inevitable. Not sure why anyone would not understand this, but there you...
Well, my "original source" is simply my background as an engineer, but since you want an online source, here ya go:

Both times I hiked the JMT I broke my usual AT-esque no-map method and on the JMT I carried actual paper maps. There is so much visual eye-candy everywhere, I really enjoyed knowing the big...
Maybe about 25-30% greater fuel efficiency, meaning a given canister will last more days, allowing more resupply flexibility and options. this is probably only important if you're a heavy hot water...
