What size does the extra small torso fit?
Could you please tell me how many litre(s) is the Quest?
I did not spend the night at Doyle's. But, if the dining room/bar is any indication, everything looks exactly the same as when I was there two years ago.
Almost forgot to add: using a full size air mattress in most single layer hammocks really eats up the interior space and may put your face uncomfortably close to the ridge line and/or noseeum mesh.
I have used the EXPED 7 DL DAM (down feather filled air mattress) repeatedly in my single layer Hennessey hammock. Lowest air temp in the Hennessey was around 30 degrees...with a 0 degree rated...
Using a wind guard with the stove....will ensure you get closer to 12 good burns...rather than 10 maybes.
I used the same OPSACK for multiple multi-day section hikes and had not problem just putting them in tree crotches near my hammock. The sacks do wear out...but it is usually apparent well before...
Mrs. Baggins...just right to call for help.
Someone else's "shake it off...and walk out under your own power."
I am very glad it all worked out...and I think that there are a lot of lessons...
Whoops, should have said WAS NOT in shape.
For the first time in two years, i got back to PA to do some more AT section hiking.
Left my car at Doyle's in Duncannan, PA and started hiking north. Was surprised to find how long the hike...
Had my day pack hung off of my hammock strap, Woke up in the morning to find that a mouse had chewed through the day pack pocket where I normally put my empty power bar warps.

+1 Kindle.
Sounds like the Doyle is the best solution. Thanks everyone!:)
Thanks Maryland....I had forgotten about that website. From just looking at it for a few minutes, it is much improved from the last time I used it. The user comments and rating are particularly...
I finished my last section hike in Duncannon, PA and am now ready to do another or two more northern AT sections. (P.S. depending upon the heat and elevation changes I might cover 5 miles in a day or...
+1 on the trail maintenance.
Until you have actually worked to help create a new section of trail....you have no real appreciation for how much hard work and how many volunteer hours it takes to...
I L O V E the idea of having fireplaces/stoves in all of the shelters :banana....but when I consider how many fire rings I have had to dig out (there was so much debris and ash that the fire ring...
Your story is an inspiration for me.
Paraphrasing Rocketsocks and/or Lone Wolf who said (sic) "A thru hike is just walking": you don't have a disease....just an ongoing illness.... which sometimes...
Yes, try any time after November 15th...usually lots of ice in the springs then!
One word, we do it for the ADVENTURE!
Some times backpacking is fun, often times it is tedious, we may get bored, we may get sick and/or injured.... but we can never really predict absolutely what...
A couple of quick observations:
You are unlikely to save a meaningful amount of weight be going to a hammock.
Unless you are in the desert or on a bald, you have lots more sites to set up on when...
It's the rocks, stupid! :)
For me, my eyes are mostly on the ground...directly in front of me (+18"), then after I have found a safe footfall, I scan out 5-10' both on the trail and an equal...
My experience: I attach the rubber covers that came when my trekking poles when they were new to the ends of my poles. Then I duct tape the covers on. Next I collapse the poles and duct tape them...
I have hiked that section many times and would think that at least half of your group will think it is an ordeal, not an adventure to do 10 or 12 miles. As others have shared, this area has lots of...
+1 to what da fungo said.
Additionally, most of the people who I know who have bought custom insoles (or orthotics as they are called) have paid from $300 to $600.....and stopped wearing them...
