As much as I love some of the cottage gear offerings, there's -nothing- wrong with the less expensive offerings from some of the mainstream manufacturers as an alternative.

Honestly I find the mobile version far worse to use. It's possible the people complaining are seeing that - I believe it's the default.

I've done it quite a bit whenever the pad fits well in the bag. It's (for me) the most comfortable way to sleep while backpacking.

Agreed with all the above. Use the thru hike goal as a reason to make changes now - not a way to make them in the future. Do what you have to do to eliminate the smoking and start incrementally...
For one thing, at least in this area the vast majority of the trail maintenance meetups I've gotten info about have been during the 9-5 work week. That eliminates a huge portion of the population...
