An old bike, huh? There are some long uphill stretches in SNP and unless you are in fantastic shape, may not feel like getting on a bike after 8-15 miles of hiking. Butr please, let us know how it...
The question begs to be asked: What then do you do when you finish the trip, supposing you do, and you are once again broke? There are jobs to be had that can keep you in close contact with the...
Here is a link to the map of the area: http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/upload/old_rag_area.pdf . There is an overnight camping area near the rock scrambles. Other than that, you would have to...
No public transportation between Knoxville and Gatlinburg and I really wouldn't recommend hitchhiking. 441 is a four lane, busy highway and the chances of getting a ride from k'ville to G'burg would...

One of the problems when "Multi Use" and "Recreational" are used together.
I would suggest trying to obtain a copy of the Great Smoky Mountains Park map "East Half-West Half". The Park does not sell these maps. To the best of my knowledge, the Map Store on Dutch Valley Road...
I would second leaving a car with Curtis at Standing Bear and having him shuttle you to Hot Springs or wherever. The ride back to Knoxville from Standing bear is a lot shorter and if I am not...
Aside from the previous problems likely to be encountered up north in the early spring, winter in the Southern appalachians is no joke either. With the amount of snow in the Smokies right now, I...
Deadeye, my comment was made with the tongue planted firmly in cheek. When Vermont experienced historic flooding and widespread damage last year, several hikers on here took offense to the fact...
Who cares about trail damage? The trail is hikable isn't it? From I've read on here in past posts, it doesn't even matter if the trail is offically closed by the local land manager due to hazardous...
Since you won't fall under thru hiker classification, meaning your hike won't start and end 50 miles outside of the Park boundary, you will be required to have registered and obtain a permit. This...
When it comes to the overall picture, thru hikers are a pretty insignificant group. A few thousand thru hikers out of nearly ten million total users including car drivers, day hikers and...
This seems like an appropriate thread for some of these guys: :banana:banana:banana
You shouldn't have any problem. It's fairly easy to hitch and is done quite often.
I've owned both the Precip and the Epic; they are both fine jackets. I think the Precip is a bit roomier and being a big guy, it is my choice. But can't go wrong with either.
If they work, keep em. They wont be waterproof long anyway. Nothing ever is on the trail.

While I don't think you will find a lot of love for externals on here, check with Campmor, Sierra Trading Post ans eBay. Dand Designs/K2 made a great external, I believe it was called the Long Bed,...
Nope. Just that after a meal and a beer, it's time to move on.
The best part of Damascus? The trail leading out of town.
All shelters should be torn down. Hikers should pay a $250.00 fee to thru-hike the AT. Hikers who carry less than 30lbs are weak. You should get a thru hiker certificate regardless of whether you...
Welcome to the Appalachian Trail.
Leave it at home. Yes, wool works even when wet, but it's weight mutliplies when its wet.
