Love the Smartweed snack photo...just ate some myself last weekend!
After trying for a while to find a copy for sale in a store, I finally ordered a copy of the BMT Thru Hikers Guide direct from Sgt Rock (the author) this past Friday. It arrived yesterday, earlier...
I did a chunk of the Chattooga River Trail in Georgia this weekend. I started to do part of the Bartram but parking was slammed and overflowing! I guess that's what happens when all the other trails...
In the interim, the shelter mice may all starve to death!

Hope this is not a duplicate...but I just received an email from the USFS that all AT trailheads in Georgia are now closed.

I was thinking that a nice long solo would be nice...and then the thought occurred to me that I don't really want to end up sick and alone in a tent in a remote area...nothing good comes from that.
I do the Charlie's Bunion hike every few years. It's one of my kids favorites and they've been doing it since elementary school. I've never thought of it as difficult.
Charlie's Bunion from Newfound Gap on the AT...assuming the road is open. Around 8 miles total (4 out, 4 back). Spectacular views, not terribly difficult, and gets you on the AT.
Mt Cammerer out...
I live 45 minutes from the AT in Georgia and hike it year round. The only months I don't go on the AT are March thru mid April just to avoid the crowds and then July and August due to frequent...
I finally looked at my NatGeo map of the area last night. Cochran falls is shown just below the Len Foote Hike Inn. Looks like maybe a half mile from that trail as the crow flies. There is a trail...
Whitley Gap shelter is a long walk from the AT although it is a nice, quiet one with a good spring. The last 1/2 mile down is steep and so makes for a steep start the next morning. If you take a...
Leave it. I work with a volunteer organization that does restoration work on both federal and state lands...we mark sections a week or so in advance of bringing in work crews and then we take the...
I park there all the time, never had an issue.
Water is generally not a problem unless we've had real rain shortages...which given recent years, is always possible. Tank up as opportunities occur and you'll be fine.
3rd vote for Charlie's Bunion from Newfound Gap. Awesome views, easy-ish hike and will fill a day if you take your time and enjoy it.
I spent a night below 20 degrees in Congaree a decade or so ago..if you know Columbia, you know how rare it is to be that cold. You can just wander until you find a place you like so long as you are...
I'm pretty sure you mean Blood Mountain instead of Springer...
I like Woods Hole shelter. great eating area, lots of wide open space and a cool log cabin type construction.
FWIW...You can't legally hunt bears with dogs in North Georgia.
I have had mice get into steel bear boxes and chew into my food bag. For the life of me, I don't see how they squeeze in.
I do carry a BV-500 most of the time now and appreciate the convenience. I...
During the week, finding a parking space at the Byron Reese parking area (at Neels Gap) is not a problem. Friday thru Sunday is near impossible in the fall.
I would also do this section...
Are you heading NOBO or SOBO and what is your planned end point?
I park at Three Forks quite often and have never had a problem. I have never left a car for a week, usually only 1 or 2 nights but no issues. Parking spots there on the weekend are tough to get but...
Three season tents are fine. I hike and camp year round in GA, NC, and TN using regular Marmot, REI, and cheap Kelty tents. I've never seen anyone with a true 4 season mountaineering tent here....
