Most of my personal AT photos were taken in the Roan highlands, so that's a biased answer. I've got to at least say Carver's Gap; though by tourists, not hikers.

I would have both in my sig, but only one fits. Oh, well..
"Keep close to Nature's heart...and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit...
I drove it last Feb in a Mustang, no problems. Its in great shape, and a real nice drive too.
I haven't gotten around to that one yet, its on the shelf. But if its worth reading 3 times, I know it will be very satisfying.
Same here. I was looking forward to Buffalo Mountain Nature Preserve in southern VA, late Saturday, and maybe half a day at Grayson Highlands Sunday (drive back to SC Sunday late) Maybe in the next...
Foothills trail in SC for Sassafras, Mountains-to-Sea trail in NC for Mitchell. That's 2 that don't, but its still worth the hike. (Helping by elimination ;))
Its so stunning to see this, I was just there on the 9th of this month. This is very sad, I hate to see that happen. I have never started a fire on a day hike, who would bother to take the time? So...
"Drood", by Dan Simmons; heavily researched historical fiction about the final years of Charles Dickens' life and the novel he never finished: The Mystery of Edwin Drood. As narrated from the point...
Wish I had seen this earlier, I just happened to be in the park last Friday. No snow to be seen, believe it or not, but the wind was ungodly fierce. I was the only soul for miles around all day,...
The line to call for daily updated road and weather conditions on the parkway is 1-828-298-0398. I don't leave home without checking there first. And yeah, the Parkway is closed at SR all the way...
Try the late fall and winter months, on Wednesday mornings. Wolf Rock is my favorite, but I hike the whole park. The only people I see have antlers ;)
Look, I know the feeling. I've recently seen one of my favorite mountains in NC go from being a long, dangerous, extremely difficult hike to being clearcut and zigzagged and boardwalked and safety...
Only because its very local, I spend a lot of time at 40 acre rock wilderness area here in northern SC. Its an ancient range, little more than hills around wetlands now with strewn boulders. One can...
Ah, now you're talking my part of the country! I've put in many segments of this trail, mountains and Outer Banks. If you've never done any dune hiking, you don't know what you're missing ;)
If...
I will never understand the motivation for people to brag about their own stupidity. One constant I have found in every situation: the more accessible an area is, the more vandals will seek to...
I drive a Mustang, very low to the ground, and had no grounding.
Just as a final notice for this thread, The Skyline trail is closed now for modifications. So the NC Parks Service is probably putting up fencing.
I'm still brand new, so from my perspective, I can really say its a wonderful thing you've done in creating a board just for us. Its only been a few weeks, and I'm already wondering what I ever did...
All this Shining Rock talk made me miss it badly, so I'll be heading this week for an overnight. There's a few segments I haven't done before, I think I'll correct that this week. I've never done...
Map of the trail in planning
One day, I will be able to take a very short trip to a trailhead at cane creek park and walk all the way from my beloved 40-Acre Rock Heritage Preserve to the...
When I stayed in Franklin back in February, I got all my info from the chamber of commerce. They sent maps at my request, and have a really good list of trails on the website with perfect...
Hi, my name is John. I found hiking the way people find religion. I went through suicidal depression as a teenager, followed by years of incredible alcohol abuse. Dead-end jobs, burned bridges,...
I was "crossing the frozen tundra" of Black Balsam one morning in late November, when I came upon a hiker heading my way from Tennant Mountain. Rail thin, about 60-ish, wearing what looked like a boy...
Same age range for my NOBO, only I've got more years to wait. Just prayin' that my health holds up, esp knees. Now is there any question that you should do it? No way, don't put it off any longer....
I wouldn't want to use up extra bandwidth, but since you liked it, here's a view of Cold Mtn, Shining Rock, Tennant, Pisgah, Frying Pan, and more. From the Art Loeb heading down Black Balsam in Nov...
