It's a shame that Wingfoot disappeared. Totally ghosted the trail community. I know circumstances and life priorities change, but nobody ever heard from him again as far as I can tell.
Make sure you send one of these to Fresh Grounds for his van...lots of hikers will see it!
Why is the Doyle Hotel no longer accepting hiker boxes? That is a long tradition.
Why not a high-quality proper shelter instead of a picnic pavilion?
I'm a former land surveyor and I was actually thinking about compiling this info for my own personal use. But now since you've crunched the numbers for me, I don't have to! Thanks!
And yes,...
Looked at the list again and noticed you have it divided into two columns with the hiker's real name on the left and their trail name on the right.
Baltimore Jack's real name was Leonard Adam...
Glad to see that you have Baltimore Jack on the list. I hiked with him a lot in the late 1990s when he was doing his first three trips. It's absolutely scandalous that he's not in the A.T. Hall of...
Hi, I heard a little while back that the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon PA was under new ownership and is now being renovated.
I haven't been there in a few years. The last time I was there it was...
Colin Gooder has loads of bad reviews on Google Reviews. Reading those is quite insightful. I'd never stay at this place just because of all the bad word of mouth I've heard.
Late to the thread, but just wanted to add that you're right that it's better to hit SNP on the flop, since everything has been up and running smoothly for a while by that time.
You won't need a bear can. There's only one short section of the trail that requires a bear can, and you can easily hike through it in less than a day if you plan accordingly.
That's kind of a weird application of LNT. I always thought LNT applied to everything that was not the trail, instead of the trail itself. Obviously, it's impossible to LNT on the trail itself...
It also depends on your gait and what kind of shoes you're wearing. The higher the boot, the less you need gaiters. And some people have the ability to hike over all kinds of pebbles and twigs and...

On the A.T. I pack both a pair of ankle-height Altra gaiters and the almost knee-height Outdoor Research gaiters. I started doing the latter years ago after I got burned walking though a patch of...
Yeah, I feel that one. I was googling something else about the A.T. recently and the first page of results was full of FKT stories. I really couldn't care less about that and in fact I think it...
I'm aware of the controversy over Grandma Gatewood's thru-hikes, but I wasn't really concerned about that.
I just wanted to know if you're tired of hearing about it at this point.
Not the AT, but here's my latest hike...in the Philippines!

This is why I posted earlier today. I visited Whiteblaze for the first time in a long time and realized it's become a ghost town, so I posted hoping to provide some momentum.
I dunno, it seems...
"Bill Bryson is a candy ass!" ~ The Baltimore Jack cheer, with trekking poles raised
BigCranky, there is a lot of excellent information in your post. But one heads up: the Creeper Trail Cafe is now permanently closed. They recently had some unfortunate incidents, including another...
If you're a thru-hiker on the A.T., there are some stories that get told, re-told, and embellished. And this can become a problem because if you're hiking in any kind of "bubble", you're hiking with...
There is now a real opportunity for someone to start a good hostel in Gorham. Hostels come and hostels go, but it would be nice to see something with the permanence of, say, Shaw's in Gorham.
Apparently this year there is a group called "The Brits" which features two hikers from the UK and two hikers from the US. If you know about this, please tell me more!
