I stayed at your place a few years ago to recover from injury. I took the private room. I remember reading the book about Uncle Johnny's hostel in Erwin, TN that I found in your library. Also, you...
Most thru hikers are students or retirees. Both groups got hit pretty hard by inflation.
My advice, call the Mountain Home B&B (easily found on the internet). They may shuttle and if not, they will know who shuttles in that area.
Maybe so. But anyone who hiked recently in those sections will tell you that the bears have no fear of humans and they increasingly are aggressive when it comes to human food. So what's to do?
DWG is a nice reward after PA. You have some decent restaurants, a local roasting company with excellent coffee, a farm stand with home-made pies, the ice cream of course and the inn with live jazz...
This's so so sad. I hope i'm not being too intrusive for asking what happened? He looked well younger than his age and well fit, but look can be deceiving. May he rest in peace. He will be missed not...
Good news for the frugal hikers.....:)
If it helps, you could fly to NYC and take the Greyhound bus to bennington, VT from NYC Port Authority or a bus service from Albany airport to NYC and then the bus to Vermont.
You could use COBRA, but you will have to pay full premium.
Traveler, thank you for a constructive and elaborate response, this clears many things up. People are quick to blame the ATC for everything they don't like on the trail forgetting that many sections...
Hi. I go by "Stephan", no trail name yet. I do section hikes every summer in July - August, and I stayed at Zen's house last summer two nights on a section hike from Amicalola to Damascus (made it to...
vloggers.......are in the eye of the beholder. Some are very good, most not so much.
A good handyman (or woman) is always in demand in hostels along the trail for work for stay, which is already not bad at all. Put the word out there and they will find you.
For a novice hiker with kids, connecticut would be, IMHO, the best choice. Long walk along the Housatonic river, gentle rolling hills, historic covered bridges, small New England towns, easy access...
From Tennessee Eastman Hiking & Canoeing Club own site:
"Arguably the most unique shelter on the entire Appalachian Trail with a great view looking down into Roaring Creek Valley. A classic wooden...
Couldn't the barn be placed on the National Register of Historic Places and get some funding from uncle Sam? Did somebody try? And what about the ATC? couldn't they pitch in and help renovate the...
You have a point. I agree. "Never" is not the best choice of word. So let me rephrase. Most negative comments came from individuals who (A) made their opinions based of what they read on social...
The owner, Zen, got a load of negative comments mostly from people who were never there. For the sake of fairness and balance I wish to tell my own, objective and impartial, experience in that place....
If i'm not mistaken, the speed limit on the palisades is 55. Almost nobody respects the speed limit. Unless the hiker has some kind of a death wish, the chances of a car traveling within the speed...
The original trail gives you some of the best views in NY and, on a clear day, you can see the NYC skyline from West Mountain shelter. I think they should keep both routes and those who are willing...
"This was pretty unique......." the understatement of the year
I would call the inn and ask them. Personally, I would be apprehensive to park in an unprotected parking lot overnight in that area. Too much traffic, too many city people especially on weekends.
I stayed there in 2015. Best wings ever and draft beer. I'm so happy to hear that they renovate the place. Let it go down under would be terrible for the town.
Such a sad and senseless loss....
