@perrymk Thanks for the details
Perry - can you give us the details on what aluminum screw and nut you got? Looks like an interesting DIY.
Gambit - the easiest way is to take a screen shot of the photos you want to upload (either on the phone or computer) then upload them. I can give you more technical ways to do it but that is the...
I was there Oct 15 - didn’t camp there but went up to the tower. If you are going northbound on the AT, there is a side trail up to Rich Mountain. Just a bit further on at AT from that junction there...
The thermodrop one has worked well for me. Replaced an Accurite one that quite.
It does Min/Max. You do have to reset it (long press a button) to get the next days Min/Max.
I did that same route in June and found shelter occupancy opened back up as people changed their itineraries closer to the date. Can’t say it’ll be that way for you but it allowed me to switch from a...
Plenty of hammock spots to answer your question especially with the limitation on the number of people.
Painter Branch is a nice camp area. I stayed there June 5th while doing Newfound Gap to Hot Springs. Couple spots right by the creek but if you cross the creek and go upstream
even more. ...
I’ve had the entire park close while I was hiking in it. It was open when I started and they closed it mid trip due to a hurricane.
I figured they’d want me to get out safely so I split my...
I had cell service at the junction of the trail/road south of Franklin. Spectrum (Verizon).
Not GSMNP but Grayson Highlands is tough to beat. Low mileage loop. Great views. And ponies.
Just pick good weather cause it can be brutal.
I’m not aware of a trail that gets you around Franklin so I think it’s either shuttle, road walk or hitch. Franklin being a trail town helps with the shuttle situation at least.
Yea my daughter is in Boone so I figure she can come give pops a ride :;
Here’s the Caltopo map.

Road walking or hitching to get to Roan / Grandfather. There’s an old carriage road up to Roan/Cloudland I’ll probably use.
The Mt...
Yea I did Foothills to Oconaluftee Visitor center this spring. Loved it. I plan to continue on next spring hitting the MST, BMCT, Roan, Grandfather and finishing up in the gorge. I’ve done a fair...
Found the link to Swami’s route. Interesting. Thanks for mentioning it Dogwood.

Thanks for piping in. I didn’t know that.
It doesn’t go through Alabama
Plenty of bear boxes near Grayson these days.
Can’t say how full they’ll be but at least they are there.

I’ll add... reservations are $8/day plus a $5 fee.
Looks like the max reservable is 40 spots. That’s about the size of the backcountry lot. They had a bunch of No Parking signs up along the shoulders that were new.
Rhododendron Gap spring had water 10/14.
I heard Thomas Knob was a trickle but flowing.
Creek flowing at Wise Shelter. Not sure of the spring.
Not sure where you are starting but Grayson...
I’ve come across a journal or note or something about the trail being done this way.
Shoot an email to the MST org email address and see if they know.
Maybe trailjournals?
