Thanks for all the tips! I've done several winter trips in the Grayson Highlands, one was the day after a blizzard dropped 2 feet of snow...sounds like this has the potential to be about the same!...

Thanks for all the tips! I've done several winter trips in the Grayson Highlands, one was the day after a blizzard dropped 2 feet of snow...sounds like this has the potential to be about the same!...
Though I've hiked the Roan Highlands twice in the fall, I am planning my first winter trip (from Carver's Gap to 19E) for this February. I imagine it varies somewhat based on recent/current weather,...
I highly recommend Sundog Outfitters. Took a shuttle with them from Damascus to Elk Garden to Fox Creek this past winter. Cost was $60.
Now I know how to preface all my future posts!
Never said it wasn't a negative post. It most certainly was. How else is one to describe a negative experience other than by using negative language? On the other hand, the experience at Sundog was...
Laughable elitist hiker BS...let me get this straight. Someone 20 years your junior without a 2-foot beard must be a kid tripping in the woods. Now you're making fun of people's heads??! Just because...
Hold on there Bulldog you're getting ahead of yourself and mixing things up. They did NOT tell us that it was "very likely" we wouldn't get a ride. They said they "might" not be able to take us and...
Apparently you care enough to post twice to the thread...if this is so unimportant then what does it say about the value of your time?! Really no one is talking trash here. No value judgments, no...
Same as it is now. MRO wouldn't drive us. Sundog did. That's all I ever said. Read my posts. Never said anything nasty about MRO. Promise.
As it was, the gentleman at MRO barely looked up from...
Ah, I see now. Quite the king of sarcasm...
Just so you know we would not have left you! We packed plenty of sense and scruples. Morals...debatable. But we would have shared our wine!
...
$60. MRO was going to take us for $50.
Rayban, mweinstone, and Blissful...all I have to say to you guys is that I appear to have touched a nerve. I will refrain from trying to guess why that is....
The way you pose your "question" as a statement followed by a question mark is an attempt to bait me into an argument. That was not the purpose of this thread. Nonetheless, if that was their concern,...
Terry took us northeast out of Damascus on SR 605, then south on SR 600 to Elk Garden. I asked him why the long way, and he said it was more scenic and just a few minutes longer.
I realize MRO may...
Thanks, the hike was great. Though it snowed a lot right before we got there, the weather was great during the hike. Pretty cold (10F + wind chill) the first night made for a poor night's rest, but...
I would like to relay a recent unsatisfactory experience I had with Mt Rogers Outfitters (MRO) which wound up becoming a very satisfactory experience with Sundog Outfitters.
My two cousins and I...
I realize weather can vary, but typically, for an overnighter on Mt. Rogers in late December, are snowshoes: (A) required equipment, (B) a luxury, or (C) dead weight? What about instep crampons or...
Well, I guess I'll be the first. :)I just received the Halcyon yesterday. My initial impressions after having set it up in the kitchen (damn rain): For the price, it’s a great tent. The tent body is...
Anyone here have experience with the Mountain Hardwear Halcyon 1 tent? I'm trying to decide between it and the Big Agnes Seedhouse 1 (non-SL), and there's not much real-world user info on the Halcyon...
Bump. Has anyone here used this tent? Considering this or the Seedhouse 1 (non-SL version). Price and weight are pretty much the same. The Seedhouse has more interior room. Halcyon is taller, easier...
Just to clarify. I am NOT talking about carrying a GPS device for navigation. The Spot GPS is for allowing others to track you (as scary as that sounds:eek:). Provided you can get to a location where...
Hi guys. Long time lurker here. Nice community y’all got here! Anyways, I have a question so I thought I’d pipe up and introduce myself. Name’s Josh. No real trail name yet (except amongst my old...
Not wanting to risk a fine, we didn't have a fire at Wawayanda. COLD! Had a good fire at Wildcat. Thanks to whoever left the wood there. Only saw 4 other hikers all weekend.
The walk from NJ/NY...
Thanks Tin Man. That sounds like the answer. I have the Data Book, Companion, and NY/NJ guidebook at home (planning my 09 thru-hike) but had not checked them for this yet. Looks like we'll be ok at...
Thanks for the replies so far and for the concern. Keep them coming. I do want to get to the bottom of this. Also, note that I'm an ex scout, not one to go around cutting down trees or building a...
I'm an avid AT weekender/week-hiker. Have done countless hikes on the AT in the smokies, a few in VA, and a few in NJ, NY. A friend and I are going in north NJ this weekend, plan to stay at Wawayanda...
