As Slo-go'en reminds us .... early April 2024 will bring a total solar eclipse to Baxter Peak, but will anyone be up there to see it?
Greetings to a fellow CentralPa'ian! I haven't seen a copperhead in the wild ... yet.. but I did see a fat rattlesnake right on the trail near Shippensburg Road. It rattled loudly, but eventually...
IIRC, you should notify the Park Rangers that you will be parking there. There is a parking lot along Rt. 30, plus another within the park itself.
You can try to contact Trail Angel Mary Parry of Duncannon to see if long-term parking is available. Google search returned this: https://www.facebook.com/trailangelmary
Great video! Saw that movie ages ago but didn't remember the scene. Wouldn't want to be actor Tom Laughlin's stunt double. ;)
Thank you, Tundracamper, for the interesting wiki article. Of the 19 fatalities listed for the period 2010-16 with a KNOWN activity by the victim, at least 12 fatalities were avoidable: 4 by pet...
Someone was operating the camera, .. it was not on a tripod, the viewpoint changes, and zooming in and out occurs. Thus, at least two people were putting their safety at risk. Did this guy...
Its victims probably don't follow and read WhiteBlaze forums, where they would learn about that telltale smell. :) Perhaps the sour cucumber smell appeals to and attracts small rodents thus ...
In 250+ miles of hiking on the AT here in PA, I've encountered only one rattlesnake who was happy to slither off the trail after I repeatedly struck the ground nearby with my hiking poles. Good...
I am going to guess that it is 'vasculitis' aka Disney rash, golfer's vasculitis, hiker's vasculitis, etc. A Google search for 'hiker's vasculitis' will yield much info. I used to get it during...
Your original post gave 2 possible hikes. Which one did you do? BTW, I need to continue north from Roundhead/Showers Steps (between 501 and 183) to complete PA, about 100 miles.
From MrClahn, post #68:
"26th Delaware Water Gap 16:42 896.1 68.8
27th Hamburg PA 22:39 971.6 75.5 "
From what I've heard, the stretch from Hamburg (near...
Beautiful pictures! Was just up at Loyalsock Creek a couple of weeks ago, will have to check out that Loop next time. On the way home, heavy rain followed by a beautiful rainbow along the...
IIRC, there is a wide open area with campsites at Yellow Springs Village site, about 4.6 miles from Rausch Gap Shelter, and 6.7 miles from PA325. There may be others in between as well. How are you...
I've watched too many YouTube videos and now I'm intimidated. Would like to hear feedback from any who didn't think it was 'not bad at all'.
Hi Angie. I need to hike from PA183 south to RoundHead/ShowersSteps where I left off, then from PA183 north to Port Clinton/PA61 as I attempt to complete PA. Check out the info below, especially...
FYI, on Aug 21, 2017 a total eclipse of the Sun will occur over the US, starting in the Pacific NW near Salem, OR and finishing near Charleston, SC. Thus, it will cross the AT in northern GA, and...

Direct purchase required, or not? Indeed confusing, considering REI is advertising the rebate form on their website.
For those interested in SPOT products, there is a rebate until Dec 31, 2015, making three products FREE. Subscription fees cost extra, of course. Links below:

If you think the parking problem is bad now, wait until 'The Walk In The Woods' effect occurs.
Not to feed paranoia, but I remember this event and couldn't believe a tent could be mistaken for a bear.

Very sad news. :-(
"A 44-year-old hiker was killed in a fall while taking pictures at Annapolis Rock on the Appalachian Trail Sunday, authorities said. The man was a United Kingdom native who...
When I get tired or short of breath or feeling like I'm going to pass out, I like to rest for awhile by leaning over and placing my hands/pole handles against my upper chest and letting the trekking...
