you could always use bleach it can be found almost everywhere. 2-4 drops per quart wait 30 mins and your good

i did it in 2 days . southbound . jacobs ladder did not look fun hahahaha . i stayed at brown fork gap shelter.
best thing to do is hike alone and sleep alone for awhile . And you will get use to falling alseep.
