ViewRanger is another good one.
I captured this image in the Grayson Highlands a couple of years ago. The rhododendron were in full bloom so it was a pretty magical trip all around.

Also, the Black Mountain Campground is currently closed for the season. Assuming the BRP is open, I say go for it. Great section of trail!

I hiked the Fires Creek Rim Trail in the spring of 2002 with two friends. It was quite an adventure!
I do remember that we had some trouble finding water along the way, but never went thirsty.

There's a really nice little motel Burnsville that I've used a couple of times when I've passed through there on the a High Country Loop. About $70/night.

I had the honor of helping film and photograph this piece back in October. Chris did an awesome job telling Jay's story. Such a powerful story!
My wife and I had our first date at Wesser Bald just over four years ago. Glad to hear the tower is still standing!
Locally, I'm hoping to squeeze in the 170-mile High Country Loop sometime this fall.
There's always the Damascus Shuffle if I need to get out for a few days.

About 60 miles from where the incident took place.
A lovely short story for you, sir.

Taken Amtrak to the trail in Maine, VT, WV, and GA- all from NC and never had an issue.

As far as weddings in a blizzard go, it was perfect! We had a handful of guests that couldn't make it because of the weather, but it was still pretty special.
We were able to get away for a few...

Yeah, they implemented the Valley Route a couple of years ago. It is now one of two options for hikers to get from Clingmans Dome to Waterrock Knob. They did away with the original route out of the...
The River Valley Route of the MST goes through Sylva. From Pinnacle Park to Waterrock Knob is 6.2 miles. From Waterrock Knob to Pisgah Inn is 61 miles, so ~67 miles total. Of course, Heartfire asked...
My granddaughter is a Senior at Watauga High. I gave her my first sleeping bag to use at Grayson Highlands. She has been 3 summers in a row. Small world.

She sure is!
She teaches at the local high school so that means summers free for hiking. We're already making plans to section the AT over a handful of summers. And, I'm hoping to get her out in...
