Absolutely agree. A hungry hiker CANNOT wait for a fire to burn down to the coals. Save the fire for drying off. warming up and for camaraderie.
Hold On !! Pretty girls snore and fart? oh no
Take a couple of local over nights, test out the equipment, hike a little bit. I started with only boy scout experience. Take it slow at the beginning and enjoy your selves.

Its your hike what difference does it make what others think. ENJOY ENJOY
In 81 "Dizzy" carried over 80 lbs out of Pearisburg. He had just received an extra large care package from home. Also he was carrying a banjo lashed to his pack. He complained for hours how heavy the...
The average weight of my pack was between 50 and 60 lbs coming out of town. Man have things changed in the last 20 years . ha ha
For me it was cosmic wimpout. Anyone know it?
The debit card is the way to go. Atms are in every town. The only down side is the bank fees. However it is much better than carrying a lot off cash.
I also hike alone most times. Its your own pace ,You own interests, and Your own trip. However I enjoyed the presence of others and the comradery of other hikers at the shelters at night.
Yeah Ive heard that one lol
For me in 1981 the Mountain house two servings was big enough for one. By far the best diners I had on the AT was a dish we called Gooch Gap stew. Every hiker in the shelter had to donate one...
Wow that is a great rainbow shot!
By the way, Jay Dizicomo did indeed carry a banjo lashed to his pack. He went by the trail name of Dizzy (him) and Rosebud (the banjo). I used to call him "TWANG" for when he didn't duck low enough...
Thanks for the ride! In 1981 I never had a problem hitching into town. Did get a ride from a couple of drunk (I think) guys in Virginia though. Was glad when the ride was over. I wonder if it as easy...

In 1981 while on my AT hike in tenn. While looking for an obscure trail to a waterfall for a lunch break, I surprised a moonshiner with a shotgun. It took a few minutes to convince him I meant no...
First of all thank you all for your service. I think its rather funny that the Marines all state that boot camp was harder. But not surprised. I went through basic Dec 75 through Feb 76 at Ft Dix in...
My goodness what a laugh! That picture of Duane Dempsey is ME! lol What paper was it in? Were you in our 1981 group? Oh to be that young again!!

Agree the trip of a lifetime, Plan, Enjoy
Because I was not in as good hiker shape when I climbed Katahdin as I was during the longest part of my hike in 1981, Due to the fact that time flattens out the trail lol I vote for Katahdin.
For me its any section in the white mountains in NH
