That message has been on his website for quite some time, can't remember exactly when I went to his site, some time in Sept and this msg was there then. Seems this has been a long standing issue with...
I have used AWOL and guthook both, and like having both. It's nice having a few hardcopy pages of AWOL's guide with me so I bought the looseleaf version for ease of splitting up into whatever size...
Don't carry a mug, and as to pot, "pot" is stashed in my pack and would be difficult to get to and it doubles as my mug (why would I want to carry both a pot and a mug, that's a lot more wt than a...
And having the smart water bottle fit inside something else helps me get my water bottle out and in of my side pockets whether in the move or standing still - ziplock doesn’t do that for me.

Just cut the upper 1/3, maybe a little less off. Works great as a scoop, weighs very little, and was easy to carry since smart water bottle fits inside nicely

relying on what someone else will be carrying is bad practice
It's not merino but try something like "Headsweats". I use these both for hiking and cycling; when I'm in the heat these help keep the sweat outa my eyes.
I've been using a Soto Windmaster and don't carry a windscreen for that. It actually works quite well in the wind but there are still those times when I will use something on the windward side of...
you might be surprised how valuable this little thing can be; I used a cutoff Dasani bottle that my Smartwater bottle fit inside. Can't tell you how many times it was borrowed :-) Definitely...
Why not just start at Mt. Ogelthorpe which was the original southern terminus of the trail. Or start in AL since initially it was planned to have a spur trail to/from there (Katahdyn was initially...
Do I need a knife? :-? Nope, I can use lighter to melt thru cord, I can bite or break most things I eat (I like my cheese especially), just seems a little barbaric/medieval  ; of course,...
item has sold
These have holes in the soles though right? Would be good for water crossings, but.....
"...save the ounces and the pounds will follow..."
Nope ;-) But I do wonder about the new ownership. They've changed the model, the new managers aren't in sync with hikers (they've not ventured onto a trail), number of bunks have been reduced while...
I'm a solo hiker but still use a duplex; I like my space and and am willing to carry an 5oz to have it. So as with everything else, it's a personal preference and what you're comfortable with.
Meant to add I also take BigSur bars along. The one flavor is like eating pecan pie (i love pecan pie) and calorie dense as well: 600-630 calories/5oz
MaryJanesFarm (http://shop.maryjanesfarm.org) is another option for prepackaged meals, and they are organic. Not quite as calorie dense as MH, but much healthier. Available at some REI's. ...
Good condition Alsek 22 degree quilt, short/regular (yep, I'm a short guy). Comes with original storage bag and sleeping pad straps. Don't let temp number fool you, it's a warm quilt. Compare fill...
This! Well said
I have a pair of these. A pair of men's size 8-9 weigh 8.0 oz. Only 1 oz heavier than the original Vivobarefoot Pure that I've used since 2014. I don't think these will be as durable but will serve...
It's a personal preference/personality style coupled with background/experience. It's what works for you and what you feel comfortable with. There is a need to be physically prepared, which can...
Need to modify my start date to 2nd week of April. Now planning to do the Pinhoti so this will be my "approach" trail. Not sure of actual date to be on Springer (but shooting for 11th or 12th)
Which version, A, B, or C?
Out of curiosity have you weighed them yet? For my purposes I got a lot of use out of the original Vivobarefoot Ultra's (200gm, ~7 oz for the pair). But can't find that verison any longer and new...
