I've got undershorts, socks, a jacket, and boots, but I need two pairs of shorts and two pairs of shorts. They can't be cotton, obviously, but I don't know what to get. Recommendations?

Plus, with all the constant rain, anything electronic/paper runs the risk of being rendered useless. I went on a two-day hike in SE Virginia, and durring this two day hike my Carbon Steel knife...
Honestly, leave the cell phone at home, or at least only use it for emergencies. Don't do it for the hippie-ludites, do it for yourself: you never want one of those things stolen.
It's a tool, not...
I bought Iodine tablets that turned the water Kool-Aid orange, but it tasted fine. Plus, most people need more Iodine. A couple bottles of Iodine tablets will set up back 10-20 $, and last for a...
Doing a variety of exercises will help with lung capacity and perhaps muscle mass, but the best way to train for dragging a pack up a hill is to, you guessed, drag a pack up a hill. Do small, local...
Finally back on the forum.
I decided not to go through with this knife, and went with a 5in fixed blade Carbon-Steel KA-BAR knife. Over the length limit? Sure. Nobody's going to see it, though.
Durring a weekend hike, I met a hiker who appeared to be solo hiking, he was from Louisiana and I think he went by "x3" if anybody's looking for him.
I decided to forgo my woolen socks on a small hike in exchange for some old cotton socks, for some reason. It rained. A lot. Drenched me. I had a blister the size of a peach pit. Wear woolen.
Entire thing. I think they may be full-tang, too, but I'm not certain.
The Karambit is one-sided, and they're pretty sharp. If you didn't tell anybody they were plastic, they might not figure it out for a long time.
Most knives that people take hiking, for any period of time, fall into one of two categories: the overkill, giant, 2lb hunting knife, or, mostly, the 1in, 5$ walmart pocket knife. I recently found a...
Probably some hick trash. All over these parts.
Some basics that may or may not have been said:
The Down VS Synthetic argument is all over this site. (go synthetic)
A 3-season bag would be fine at ~30.
A winter bag should be at least 10, and...
Some basics:
Internal
- Typically lighter, although YMMV
- Typically more expensive, although, again, YMMV
- Easier to move about in (good for rough trails)
External
- Easier to pack, as the...
Salomon GTX 4D boots. Mid-high cut. Lightweight (for boots), comfy, goretex lining where the shoe meets the sole. Kinda expensive, ~200$, but I like them. They'd make it the whole way, but you'd...
The only way to train for lugging a pack up a hill is to lug a pack up a hill, so that "tune up" hike is a good idea. Another good idea is to go on a 2-3 day hike once you've got your gear so you can...
Recipie for the Two-Day Granola Bar
4/3 Cup Rolled Oats (not chopped/quick oats)
2/3 Cup Sesamee Seeds husked, Sunflower Seeds unhusked, Sliced Almonds, Flax Meal, Chocolate Chips, Melted Butter...
Use synthetic. Avoid this issue. Quest Eagles Peak Mummy Bag is good.
Large internal frames seem a bit risky for your back comfort. Take five minutes to look into one of the externals made by Kelty. The Kelty Yukon 4800 is solid, but they have larger and smaller packs.
Try the Elkommando kilt. Very sturdy and solid. Well reviewed. Seems much better for movement than shorts.
They're like two-sided carabiners, but much smaller. I found them after I bought several carabiners, and I quickly added them to my list. Very light, very useful. Has anybody who used them had any...
You can shorten hiking poles? Sweet. Learning a lot today.
Although, you should take any opportunity to make you hike easier and safer. I don't normally say this, but HYOH.
Take an external and a walking stick. You'll make it with your main pack, reasonalby. Also, look into the Kelty Yukon 4800 if you don't already have a pack.

My experience tells me that external frame backpacks are MUCH less hot that external frames and would be a real plus in the summer months . . . while traversing VA...
