+1 on the cozy. You could soak your pasta, just bring it to a boil, then place in the cozy. Saves a lot of fuel for me. I posted a step-by-step on my blog with video

Thanks for sharing! I will have to find one the next time I head through DC or baltimore!
This is my cozy. It has a gusseted bottom so stands-up. Lots of duct tape for emergencies :) weighs between 1.5 and 3 ounces depending on how big you make it.

I am "wild" about foraging (haha)! I lead some edible plant walks, and love to attend walks and seminars!
Here is a blog post about my "rules" of foraging...
What about doing something other than macaroni with your cheese sauce? Cheesy ramen or couscous? You can get the cheesy flavor without the mess and inconvenience of boiling pasta...
There are a ton of really cheap second hand dehydrators available. Check out ebay or Craigslist. I would definitely buy an electric model before building one, unless you are off the grid and...
Here is a series of articles I did on making healthier DIY trail meals. I like to use a mix of home dehydrated and freeze-dried foods. Can't live without Freeze dried cheddar cheese! YUM!

I like to experiment with foods; dried and freeze-dried. Here is a solution to boring oatmeal. FBC method. What I found was that slightly grinding the quinoa after drying gave them a grit...
I hike with a kilt with loose mens boxers underneath, but i have rarely had chafing before a kilt. My DH, OTOH, has serious chafing issues and wears compression shorts under his hiking shorts. ...
Nido powdered milk and dehydrated butter powder. If you can't find Nido, Walmart.com has it for a good price, and will ship free to home with a $50 order. I also started using it in my coffee and...
In addition for eating pemmican on the fly, I use pemmican in beef recipes on the trail: throw it in a freezer bag with some veggies and noodles (or instant rice) for a very satisfying and filling...
Another quinoa lover here. So versatile.
Am I the only person that eats raw oatmeal? Mix in some peanut butter and honey. The oats absorb the oil from the peanut butter to soften them up. ...
Cerridwen, as a fellow plant enthusiast, I can totally relate to wanting to get away from it all and check out the flora. Usually during TD, our hiking group does a Mt. Rogers hike (beautiful but not...
I'm wondering who else he accosted in the 9 days he was on the lam...:-(
That is good, but I think mine is better. And I have a full "shameless plug" disclosure. Even if it's at the very bottom :) Just saying, I don't think anyone with experience should be telling those...
point well taken. This guy is violent and even worse - desperate, IMHO. Resorting to armed robbery and kidnapping when apparently homeless means he has no boundaries. I only meant that a trail angel...
Here is a post I have on my blog about what I carry, along with a link to my geargrams list. Not for everyone, but what works for me and I sleep very cold! ...
Try an orthotic. I have a custom one that I use in all my shoes/boots...
Lol. Guess I need to give up on my SOBO dream hike since the NOBO's have it so much better :)
Sounds like he isn't a hiker but a local who scouts the area looking for handouts under the guise of a hiker? What stinks is that people who do this makes everyone think that hikers are thugs and...
Ex-Officio men's boxers under a kilt. You don't even know you are wearing anything!
Curious why you would send your Sawyer Squeeze home in Damascus? That is when you will want to pull it out of the gear closet, as it will break the internal filter if it freezes.
Just a note, I...
Go for it!! I think if your wife is supportive then you have no better time than the present. You can still get in pretty decent trail shape before you start if you go for walks with your loaded...
check with your OB/GYN. If you have recurrent infections or are concerned about being prone to one on the trail, they may be willing to give you an advance rx for Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin), which is...
