Dr. Bronners goes an incredibly long way, I can get away with only a few drops per shower, so for me the weight savings just wouldn't seem necessary.

I've used NikWax products with some luck, I do think the wash may work better than the spray as it seems to last longer.

Some of the Salomons I've worn had a rock plate, I think it did help especially on sharper rocks. I don't think it would convince be to buy a shoe one way or the other though.

I can also vouch for Altra and some Hoka Ones. Altras are some of the widest and most forgiven toes box I have found
