and besides the sun, there might be some other stars that are further away that might be visible.....

I think your howitworksdaily "article" is overly pessimistic. 6 to 12 miles only? Nah . . more like a 100 miles from a viewpoint on a reasonably clear day. I've seen the White Mountains of New Hampshire from the Long Trail in Vermont.
