The hiking community mourns another loss with the passing of Raymond Myers aka "Rain Man" last weekend at the age of 66. Coming a mere two weeks after the passing of Don “Hikerhead” Hoke, this is quite a jolt.
A native of South Carolina and proud graduate of Clemson, Rain Man lived in Nashville, TN where he practiced law and was active in his Christian faith community. He and his wife raised 3 daughters, one of whom I met by happenstance before I knew him; my hiking partner Keith Bance and I shared a shelter on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia with his daughter Sarah.

We lost another hiker, friend, and asset to the Appalachian Trail community on 02 August.
Known here on WhiteBlaze as Hikerhead and to the Appalachian Trail community as Hokey Pokey. He was one of the original members of WhiteBlaze. He contributed a lot to the WhiteBlaze web site in its early days.

It is very sad news that I have to pass on that our fellow WhiteBlaze member "Weary" has passed on. Here is an article by Jym St. Pierre about Weary.
Robert Cummings of Phippsburg died Thursday, January 21, at age 86.
Born in Bath, Maine, Bob Cummings was a 1958 graduate of the University of Illinois School of Journalism, where he worked part-time as a reporter for the Champaign-Urbana Courier. After returning to Maine he worked briefly in the Machias Bureau of the Bangor Daily News before joining the staff of the Bath Times. Later he worked at the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram for many years.

A weary Appalachian Trail hiker arrives at the crossing of the Kennebec River in the tiny town of Caratunk and stares at eighty yards of dark, moving water. The trail turns to gravel and stops at the river's edge, picking up again on the other side. The scene is picturesque, with dense woods flanking the narrow stretch of river and trees climbing up the hills in the distance. Pretty as it may be, hikers approach with dread. Beneath the seemingly placid surface of the water, stones rounded from the current are covered by silt and slime. Attempting to cross the river here has been compared to walking over greased bowling balls....

David S. Clifton , Jr. Ph. D. passed away on Sunday January 13 at the age of 69.
