  1. Equipment: REI vs Amazon

    My local hiking club (Louisiana Hiking Club) had their Camp Fest this weekend so it gave me a good opportunity to get out into the woods and try out some of my new equipment. I learned a lot.

    My home is getting overrun with boxes as equipment from (mostly) REI and Amazon.com have been getting shipped to me. There are local outfitters in my area, but nothing like an REI.   2. Test Drive

    In the past month I've gradually been acquiring gear, researching a bunch, talking and emailing people, etc. etc.

    Main issue for me has been acquiring properly fitting orthotics, which I hope to get this week. (Kind of important for proper foot and knee function!)

  3. Christmas, 2014

    I suppose it all started Christmas, 2014. I love to read. My son does too. We exchanged books for Christmas presents. I gave him Robinson Crusoe: The Complete Adventures (Vol.1 - Vol.2), Daniel Defoe. The first volume he'd read and loved before, the second volume most people are unaware that it existed, as was true for him. He gave me Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, Cheryl Strayed and A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson.
