I am writing this post at Bearfence Hut at mile 919 in Shenandoah National Park. This is my first day back on the trail since taking 8 zeros due to my shin splint injury. I had left the trail on June 7th. My brother Alex, who is a nurse practitioner, had told me the only real way to heal shin splints is to rest them. I finally heeded his advice!

While off the trail I visited a physical therapist- Janell Smith-Emery. She has an office near Stahlstown, south of Ligonier. I know Janell ...

Yesterday, June 6, I hiked 14 miles with my shins sore almost the entire time. When I woke up this morning, they were still sore, one of the few times they hurt the next day before walking on them. So I decided to get off the trail. This injury has been nagging me for several weeks so I needed to bite the bullet and give them meaningful rest. I broke the news to Tejas and Zey, who totally understood. I am so sorry to have to leave them, as they have been wonderful hiking partners. This injury has ...

Yesterday (June 4) we got a ride from Dr. Who at Stanimals up to the trail. I hiked 7.7 to Calf Mountain Shelter and decided to stay there for the night. The problem with going further is that I would have to walk another 13 miles to find an allowable place to camp. Since the rules are more rigid a National Park, I can only stay certain places. Allowable tent sites are not listed in Guthooks or my Appalachian Long Distance Hiker Association (ALDHA) guidebook, so to move forward beyond Calf Shelter, ...

  4. Day 87: Going with the flow

Slept really well last night, surprisingly. Enjoyed have the camp to myself in the morning. Not worried that Iím slow and the last one in camp or having to be quiet packing up to not disturb the people still sleeping. Today the plan is to do 16 miles to Harperís Creek Shelter. That gets me part way up a big climb and leaves me 14 miles to the road to get picked up to Waynesboro tomorrow. However, today feels like a slow day with lots of breaks. I ran into Traffic Light and Sasquatch at the next ...

  5. Day 86: Stealth Camping for the first time

Nice and slow morning today. We went to the Waffle House next door and had a nice breakfast. Didnít make it back on trail until 10am. Planned to do 14 miles to the shelter, but make cut it back with how slow Iíve been. There was also trail magic that I hit in the afternoon and took a nice long break. I was impressed by Tree Frog who was cooking peppers on the lid of her stove for her sandwich. I wish I had been more inventive with food on trail, but I always end up getting the same stuff. Iíve been ...
