  1. Travis McGee, John Muir, and me, still in Cedar Key 17

"Travis McGee's still in Cedar Key
    That's what John MacDonald said
    My rendezvous so long overdue
With all of the things I've sung and I've read
They still apply to me, they'll all make sense in time

    But now I'm incommunicado
Driving by myself down the road with a hole in it
    Songs with no bravado
Takin' the long way home" - J. Buffett

It's time for me too to be incommunicado. I've got my gear together. There are a couple

Alea iacta est "The die is cast" - Julius Caesar

There is a point in every endeavor when the abstract gives way to reality. That point where you have to "put your money where your mouth is." I reached that point last Friday when I began making travel plans for Calamity Jan to meet me on the Trail.

The only way to make it work is for her to fly to the closest airport then drive to predetermined points on predetermined dates. It's a logistical conundrum ...

That's how it flows right to the end
His body's still flexible but that
    Barnacle brain don't bend
I'm growing older but not up
My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck
So let the winds of change blow over my head
I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead"

  4. Travis McGee, John Muir, and me, still in Cedar Key 14

On the trip back from Jacksonville last week I, for the most part, followed the same route that John Muir took across the state to reach Cedar Key and the Gulf of Mexico. He followed the path of the war disabled Florida Rail Road from Fernandina Beach on the Atlantic side. The Florida Rail Road was inspired by David Levy Yulee the first Jewish US senator and southern sympathizer who contrived a 125 mile rail road that would connect the east and west coasts of Florida and reduce by 1000 miles what ...

  5. Travis McGee, John Muir, and me, still in Cedar Key 13

The trip to Jacksonville and REI was fruitful. I was able to add to my gear list and my comfort level with my kit is good. My confidence in my preparation is such that I feel as long as I am moving forward I am making progress. I have two months until I step off and I am certain that I will be prepared physically, as well as, having the right gear, and logistical support to be successful.

The whole process has been positive. I can see where since deciding in October that I would make ...
