  1. Beagle Gap – Calf Mountain Hut and Spring – Shenandoah National Park

The view at Little Calf Mountain is outstanding, as is the easy 1 mile hike to it from Beagle Gap. There is ample parking at the Beagle Gap parking area in-between mile posts 99 and 100 on Skyline Drive in SNP. There is no view at the Calf Mountain Summit but there is a disc inset marker just south of a large rock pile marking the summit. The distance from the parking to the rock pile is ~1.8 miles. I thought the shelter was a lot closer (it is, ...

  2. Paul C. Wolfe Shelter – Appalachian Trail – Albright Loop Trail

Happy New Year! Another 3 miles down (and back) - 1991.8 to go! This was a quick 2 day hike where I wanted to get some practice in very cold conditions again. The weather did not disappoint, it was 1°F! I parked at the Humpback Rocks parking area on the Blueridge Parkway and hiked a short 3.6 miles to the Paul C. Wolfe Shelter to set up camp. Total loop distance, including down to the shelter, is 6.4 miles. The shelter has great water and privy. ...

  3. Blackrock Summit, Hut, and Spring - Shenandoah National Park

This is the section south of the Falls over Blackrock Summit and to the Hut. Blackrock hut is nondescript and has an unreliable water source. I liked the area anyway and the surrounding hikes over Blackrock and around Doyles River Falls and Jones Run Falls are very good! Distance hiked this weekend was 14.2 miles.

  4. Awesome Blue Blaze near Blackrock Summit, Hut, and Spring - Shenandoah National Park

I'm continuing to creep my way south though SNP on the AT. I might actually get it done this year. LoL. This is one of the better hikes along the Appalachian Trail I've had in Shenandoah National Park (at least everywhere North of here). The blue blaze loop around the falls is well worth it! Starting at the Doyles River Trail parking lot at Skyline Drive mile post 81.1, I followed the Doyles River Falls Trail south past the upper and lower Doyles ...

  5. SNP Ridge Runner Blissful's Unsolicited and Ill-Informed Opinion

On 04 July, while descending from Mary’s Rock in the SNP, Jax Dad encountered ridge runner Ms. Bliss. Following mutual greetings of “Happy Fourth of July”, she commented on his red, white and blue equipment/garb and proceeded to examine his gear from a distance of several feet. A discussion then ensued about his trail experience to date. In that discussion Jax Dad remarked that he found the hike pure drudgery; it was one step after another with little opportunity to observe more than where the next ...
