I don't wait in that line Lou, they organize their pickup orders by time slot, so you can call and place an order several hours in advance. Usually my fiancé calls them at lunch to make an order for pickup when she gets out of work.

Grand Central to Appalachian Trail is 113 minutes according to the schedule.
http://as0.mta.info/mnr/schedules/sched_form.cfm
Almost 2 hrs. I'll bet it's really a nice ride.
ATM.........when you get off that train, you head north and cross Route 22. Right there on 22 are 2 large parking lots on either side. On the north side there is usually a pizza truck parked there! Brick oven in the back and everything.
I'll bet that's what they get.

For us, it was a last-minute decision, and we lucked out, getting two parking spots together right in front of Sally's and only half an hour's wait. Then, the pizza was all-world. So it worked out great.

The new caretaker of Wiley Shelter and his friends just fixed the water pump there, so hikers now have an easy source of water and don't have to rely on the stream. He and his girlfriend are avid hikers who adopted the shelter a few months ago and spend about every other weekend doing maintenance there. Wish they'd been in charge before I passed through last year.

Great to hear that the caretakers are doing such a good job of it!
I haven't been there in about two years, but I used to camp there in the winter (and gladly will again), never had a problem myself. However it's proximity to the road and to the A.T. Train station causes the place to be a magnet for partiers as well as first time hikers going out on their grand adventure. Last time I was there the log book was full of tales from the previous summer about people carrying rolling suitcases and duffel bags and hair dryers from the train station to Wiley, ditching stuff as they went (in true Katz fashion) because they couldn't handle the weight of what they brought. Many thanks to folks who maintain that area!

Meanwhile, up here, we're enjoying Arkansas weather in CT, with the added bonus that the air here is much more polluted than in Rackensack. It's time to hide indoors or near or in cool water. Right back at you, dmax. We really enjoyed talking with you guys and hanging out for a bit at the shelter after lunch. As for the trout, I took one nice Rainbow (about 12 inches) below the falls around where the concrete is poured to get around the rock ledge. Tried at the falls for a bit but I wasn't willing to wade any further than the very shallow rocks before the pool. Without a fly rod it was hard to get my casts out very far.
