Our course is not as groomed as we would like so we usually play you can "fluff" up your lie a little. I like to play by the rules and usually shoot in the low 90's from the white tees. My lowest score ever was an 80. I have shot par one time on 9 holes. Never had an eagle yet or a hole in one but still hopeful.
I've only ever shot par once and that was on an 18 hole par 3 course. (LOL) Lowest score ever was a 77 but that was on a course with a really low slope rating. No eagles, within 5" of a hole in one.

I think I've shot somewhere between 105 and 115 if memory serves...your basic 3 to get on 3-4 to get in...though I did get a bogey once.:D
I love them sand traps...there a hoot! I use to practice hitting a ball up and over the goal post at my local High school football field....from about three feet away..up, got pretty good at it to....open the club face on a SW to full on open...put the ball as far forward in my stance is as humanly possible...a very short back swing, and a follow thru very high, emphasis on the high follow thru...that ball would shoot straight up in the air and over the post...though on occasion I'd hit the ball with the leading edge......bingo...still haven't found those balls yet, but they out there. :D

You can also do that shot with a closed face on a wedge, play the ball to the back of your stance and swing down on the ball, pops it up and little chance of blading it.

My favorite is to just throw my hat on the ground, and walk about 30 yards away and just chip em in the genral direction, I don't loose as many balls that way, and it's tons of fun. I've found that swinging real easy and light works better for me.

Overload and I have returned from our Trail Maintenence weekend.........how have we not hit 42,000 yet? Did we have another Cafe' outing that I was not aware of?
language can be used to communicate, and language can sometimes be divisive.used to hurt.
words can only be hurtful if you empower the speaker by responding to those words.
That disregards the fact that it's a normal human reaction that when someone insults you, it hurts, as HM pointed out was true for you, Andy, in the instance she cited. One can steel oneself against such attacks, but that doesn't guarantee some of them won't hurt.
There's a lot of harsh, judgmental, self-righteous and trollish spirit around this board, and too often a failure of compassion, respect and understanding. Takes some effort to navigate around it, like downed trees in the woods after a good storm. ...

Agree, words can be forgiven but hurting ones seldom forgotten. Many time it's unintentional, but still hurts. Some of us can let it roll over our shoulders, but with others it's hurtfull to their hearts. To classify it as a net thing doesn't dissolve anyone of what they say! I don't understand the mindset where we can be more disrespectful on the net than in person?

It can be an easy, low-accountability way to vent anger, frustration and resentment. If you're carrying around an excess of those, it's tempting to dump some now and then in an easy place. We all have some frustration, and lord knows, in my day, I've channeled my share online. The solution, best as I can tell, is to develop compassion and respect for others, to assume for the best unless others insist otherwise, and then to politely confront, then, if need be, to withdraw and move on. Let's hope more find they can choose to stay rather than feeling a need to check out.

Gotcha. I hear it both ways no matter where in the South. But rarely hear the traditional Southern pronunciation in the North.
I grew up in the south and say Appalayshun. I think this latch business is more of a southeastern thing, not sure it's a majority in the southwest.

A few pics from my hike up the ski trails to Killington Peak Saturday. Got a late state due to an annual fundraiser party I'm obligated to attend, and shied off from the Whites due to rain forecast for Sunday. K was beautiful, though I didn't love the ski-trail approach, would have preferred the wilderness route. The one good thing was the continuous fine views of the Whites and opening views northward to fellow VT 4K peaks. It was an A day for views - Mt. Washington to the Adirondacks. Camped in a flat area just east of the summit was a hiker, Greg from Mass, who was good company and took a few pictures of me. I caught one of him at his camp on the way down.

That's where we got it from. They told me it tasted similar to potatoes. We boiled it and smashed it and put butter and salt on it, but I never thought it tasted like potatoes. Have tried it at least a dozen times. There used to be a Cabbage Palm Festival in LaBelle, FL every year. Never been but I guess it was a pretty big local deal. I did know these black ladies that had a restaurant there that made a killer sweet potato pie. Whenever we went through there we made sure to stop.

Took me while to figure it out, ATM. For Pano to work well with the IPhone5, and probably the 4S, you have to hold the phone in "portrait", not "landscape" orientation - short ends parallel to the ground, long ends perpendicular. In landscape, it cuts off the top of the photo, does for me at least. Works just fine when you hold it tall-wise. It's a spiffy tool. In landscape, it cuts off the top of the photo, does for me at least. Works just fine when you hold it tall-wise. It's a spiffy tool. More pics on my FB page, here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10201521226575494.1073741829.1321623751&type=1
That is really interesting since intuition would lead you to think Landscape. The things you learn on WB and the Cafe. :)

does the AT run right over the top of the Mountain your on?
It runs near the top of Killington, but not over it. Near the Cooper Lodge shelter, there's a spur trail to the summit that gains about 350' in about 0.2. I looked down the last of its route to the summit, and it *is* steep. It's worth the trip on a clear day. Outstanding views, and the summit area is pretty, though marred by a few communications towers.

They sell the Heart of Palm in the grocery stores in FL. I had it a long time ago and didn't like it. It seems to sell pretty well. There's got to be a good way of preparing it.

Yes you have to kill the tree to get the heart. No easy job. Not worth it in my opinion. Starving would be another matter. I may try and make the Cabbage Palm Festival this winter in LaBelle just out of curiosity.

When I hiked the summit from the gondola while snowboarding that trail looked like the obvious way back down... In retrospect it makes perfect sense to me that that was a hiking trail and not a ski run. :)

Back when you were working for Bill, We parked at Gifford Woods, walked in the rain to Cooper Lodge (It was raining harder inside than out), next day more rain. We climbed up, then down the slopes. We ditched our packs and hitched back to the car, came back to get our packs. I got home and realized I had lost my GM/LT guide book when I ditched the pack. I was heart broken, that book had miles and miles of Long Trail walk notes in it.

Aw man, Lou! That stinks! It's a hassle to get GMC stuff, too - probably was moreso then. I stopped at Sam's in Hadley, MA on the way up to K Sat. May be the only place outside VT you can lay your hands on GMC maps - I picked up Mansfield and K-area maps. At least now, if you're patient and trust the mails, you can order GMC maps and books online. And I think I've seen the LT book at Barnes and Noble, come to think of it.

You're doing great, Jacko. Remember that in some respects, the A.T. is like real life. We all have shi**y stretches of days and good ones. All part of the ebb and flow. Just remember, as you hack your way through the ragged rocks of PA, on the far side are NY and New England as a reward. Lots of fun to be had and friends to join you here and there.
As for the War of Yankee Aggression bit, as one who grew up in the south, I always chuckled at that one, since the way started with rebels bombing Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Was that aggressive? Did Abe make 'em do that? ;)
WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU ABOUT THE HALF GALLON CHALLENGE!
The resultant bowel actions are rapid and impressive!
 Now that might've been the green ice cream!

Can't participate for very long today. Taking my Dad to the Tigers v Orioles game!
Totally expected to log on this morning and congratulate someone on the 42K. These people need to get off the hiking trails and back into the café. Maybe need some new songs on the jukebox HB.
Call me old fashioned but I would go for Neapolitan, after half gallon you are going to get pretty tired of one flavor.
Storm, while I don't care for strawberry or chocolate, I do like your logic. :)
For the record-
they no longer have half gallon containers.
1 1/2 quarts of choc chip in 18 mins.
1 pint green choc chip another 8 minutes.
I have my spoon.
:-)
Oz, way to go!!! I would say it is all down hill from here, but I believe you still have a few more mountains (literally) to climb. ;)
Invisible Man gets there tomorrow.
I have texted him warning him.
You have experience (learning from your mistakes),
and now IM has wisdom (learn from someone else's mistakes).

Aw, you are lucky. Since the Astros are rebuilding right now my youngest sons has 'adopted" the Tigers as his second team.

Just like all his other cunning moves Lincoln knew exactly what he was doing. He wanted a war, and he made sure he got one.

I think it was all the itchy beards back then.
I think it was all the itchy beards back then.
Speaking of beards my wife has never liked me in a beard. Since I have become clean shaven I ran out of razor blades. We bought a 10 pack at Wallymart and when she saw the price she said "Grow your beard back!"
Maybe we can steal the big 42K
Naw, that wouldn't be fair, I don't have to work.

Storm, I had seen BB and RS do it before, but that was the first time I ever seen you roll off 11 in a row.

Getting excited about your upcoming hike, Astro?
How long have you been retired, Storm?
I retired from my main job (steel mill) in 2003, worked about 5 more jobs after that but decided I had enough in 2011. Not enough money, just enough of working.

Wow, was it that many? I wasn't counting. Consider it my contribution towards the 42K. Good luck to everyone going for it. I will check back tonight to see who is king of the poho's.

Yeah, I'm shooting for retiring at 62 myself. The money part will determine whether I do or not. Did you have an easy transition from working to not working?

I had been working since I was 17 and it was a difficult transition. I still think about going back to work sometimes and then talk myself out of it. It gets easier with each passing year.

I have the worst beard ever at the moment. I can't believe my wife hasn't made me shave it yet. I let my goatee go for about three months, then let the rest gof the last month... The goatee grows well, but the rest is terribly patchy and thin in spots. I'm getting laid off at the end of next week and just figured I should look like a total bum for that occasion. :D
When and where you going?
Week from Saturday going from Hot Springs, NC to Waynesboro, VA. That is assuming the old body holds up OK.

My wife doesn't care for facial hair, so usually never go for more than a few days. It will be nice to not have to shave for over a month this summer. And not have to wear long pants. Not have to go to work. Yeah, coming to think of it I really am looking forward to this hike! :sun

It'll be a little warm in that section at that time...no?
It'll be a little warm in that section at that time...no?
Yes, but it is only time I can get off. I teach normally mid-Aug to mid-May, then teach as much extra as I can mid-May to June to have the $ to go in July. Better to hike in hot weather than not hike at all. Plus growing up in South Florida and working in Houston for 18 years I probably have a littler more tolerance for the heat than some. I have enjoyed my spring break and Thanksgiving break hikes, but a week at at time (some times only a few days with family events) is not going to get me to Maine soon enough.

A lot of it'll be cool b/c high up, but I bet it gets hot down in the I-81 corridor.

Never saw snow until I was 20, so I guess I am probably a little better with the heat than the snow. The Smokies with snow and ice was interesting though.
