Your photographer might want to start using what's called "fill flash" for all bright background scenes. That is, if he'd like for faces to be visible. For most amatuer photographers, the best rule is to turn the flash ON (not "Auto") and leave it there all the time, to avoid dark faces like this.
A great hiking area, the Big South Fork, including in the winter snow.
