I have spotted these tiny owls. You can easily miss them. They are small, not largely than a clenched fist. Very cool! -

Another type of owl, very small like this, but with longer legs, that I've come across in the western U.S. and Florida is the Burrowing Owl. It's typically nocturnal and has an ear piercing screech. They can produce a vocal racket! Think of that Joe Pesce scene in the movie 'My Cousin Vinny', although I think that actually was a Screech Owl. It sometimes takes up residence near burrowing ground tortoises in its Florida habitat.
Heart shaped faced and cream plumagged Barn Owls are quite striking too!
