This is my latest External Frame. It uses a feature from an old (30 years or so) Jansport M3 Backpack, the "wing things". All tubing used on the frame is Carbon Fiber. The frame without the white stuff weighs a little less than 9oz. This is the frame that the 2.10oz Pack Bag is mounted on.

Looks similar to the pack in Horace Kephart's 1917 Woodcrafting book, chapter VIII, page 133, though that one weigh's 2.5 lbs, but then it has straps on it.
