My next headlamp

The Petzl e-lite was perfect for my 1,101 mile AT hike last year. Super light, enough options (high, low, red, white, flashing...), and always available (because it's so small!). I used it once for an emergency night hike. It was fine and I hope to never night hike again.

I know this thread has dragged on from headlamps to spoons. I can't find out much information on the Petzl Core rechargeable battery and it is apparently discontinued but they have the new Accu Core version coming out with improved 1250 mAh. REI is taking pre-orders and it is due in 30 days. Info is scarce on it but if it works I am considering using it and a Petzl headlamp instead of my Spot on my thru-hike this year. Should save $ on batteries and weight if it lasts long enough not to have to carry extra batteries.

Looks like I am going shopping.
I bought the original e+lite. I like the light but it only had 26 lumens. Too low for my overall needs.
Purchased a Zebralight and love it but the thing burns through batteries like crazy. Not so much on the lower levels but on high, ouch.
I also have a Petzl Tikkina headlamp, simple, simple, simple. I use it for most everything. It sports 60 lumens which is way plenty of me.
With the revision of the e+lite to 50 lumens this might push the ZL out of my pack.

My first Black Diamond Spot was the 2013 version. I still have it. I love it but, it has since been relegated to my toolbox. I updated that with the "newer" Spot version which provided 130 vs 90 lumens. (sorry if the stats are a bit off). I have since added the "newest" Spot headlamp. It is LED and now provides 200 lumens. It is feature rich, easy to use and will be sale priced at REI for $29 a couple times a year.

I think I'd prefer the small strap on the new elite over the old retractable cord. Never found those cords at all comfortable unless wearing a beanie

Actually the original e+lite had a strap (mine does). I don't like the retractable cord either.
Hope the new strap is better than the older one. Mine lost its elasticity relatively quickly.

To introduce a bit of variety, I have Bright Medic FireFly UL headlamp: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K1JKDHU and I have been pretty happy with it. It's really unobtrusive and simply keep it in my pocket all the time during my backpacking trips, so I have it easily available whenever I need it.

Still waiting to see more on the new 2017 elite. Kind of pricey at $30. Hopefully it hits vendors and is priced slightly lower

It looks like the red setting is still too weak to be used as an after dark light to preserve night vision.

Update - January 2017

Petzl has taken the E+LITE and given it a number of updates. Check out the new version (left) next to the version we tested (right) below, as well as a summary of functional updates!

Here's a summary of the key differences between the updated E+LITE and the version we tested:

• Lumen Boost — The new E+LITE features 50 lumens, compared to 26 in the older version.

• New Headband — The redesigned E+LITE comes with a new, more traditional elastic headband.

• Redesigned Bulb Placement — The bulb placement in the new version has been redesigned from the version we tested. We haven't tested the updated E+LITE yet, so we can't say what functional impact this update has.

Love my black diamond spot. Works great for the occasional night hike, it also has a red light which is great for shelter life.

This is a great little headlamp and about as light as you can get. Good light, and enough for emergency night hiking if necessary. But I would not make a habit with it.

What I use. Completely adequate. Waterproof, long battery life. Won't get turned on accidentally.

Ditto. Not sure how appropriate it would be for night hiking, but if you decide against it then this would tick all the boxes.

Not unless it will also pitch my tent or cook my dinner or do something to justify that price tag.

Plenty of options that cost far less and have better options for backpacking needs.

I get a nice surefire discount from work... However that light is overkill for my hiking needs.

I'll be picking up the new elite and using it this year on short trips to see how it is.

Gonna be going fast and light this year to explore as much as I can due to time constraints with work.

I like the Coast Headlamps from Portland. I grabbed a FL75 off eBay for $26 and the same seller has dropped his price to $23. Pretty good for an $80ish headlamp. 3.7 with batteries 400 lumens with a red light and has solid reviews.
