Default Anyone camped at Backbone Rock Campground lately ?

    Hi fellow hikers !!
I'm planning to visit the Damascus VA area for a few days. I see Backbone Rock is a small Forest Service campground close by. What do you think about it ? Any other suggestions.
I really like Hurricane Campground, but I want to be closer to Damascus.

Default Water available at Backbone Rock?

Yes, it's a very nice Nat Forest CG.

A couple of years back, I called the Cherokee NF Ranger District which includes Backbone Rock (Cherokee since it's just over the line from Damascus, in TN). The website mentioned "no water available" and the person I spoke to said there was a failure of some sort with the water system and no repairs were on the horizon. I wonder if the problem is rectified now?

Default For the benefit of others interested in Backbone Rock CG

From I-77 in WV: I-77 south to I-81 @ Wytheville, I-81 south to Glade Spring, VA (Exit 29), VA 91 south to Damascus, R on Laurel Ave (US 58 West), approx 5 blocks west to Shady Ave on L, Shady Ave south to TN state line, becoming TN 133 @ state line, Backbone Rock CG on R approx 1 mile into TN.

If Abingdon is an easier entry point from southern WV, take US 58 East at the I-81/US 58 junction, straight into Damascus, cross creek at Red Caboose, Shady Ave on R within 2-3 blocks of the Red Caboose.
