OK, on my reckoning Scott needs to cover either 57.9 miles or 52.9 miles today (Friday) to get to Kokadjo-B or West Branch Ponds roads respectively.

    So a big day ahead.

If he did 57.9 today, he'd almost be in striking range to finish with a single, ultra-distance effort starting on Saturday. However, a bit of sleep on Saturday night might be necessary for the final push up Katahdin.

He's been sitting at Rte 15 for an hour after what appears to be a long nights sleep.

Unless he is sick or injured I can't see him not taking the record if he has the energy left to do this like an ultra.

Scratching my head. Why the big cap in his track from Black Hill to Hwy 6/15? then a long straight line to the next dot at Leeman Brook? Why like this?
I got my own make or break landmark. Jo-Mary Road. When does Scott cross Jo-Mary Road. That is the question.

    Interested amateur watching here:

How do the 144 miles JPD faced compare with the 114 Jurek is facing, terrain-wise? My assumption is that his miles are somewhat more difficult at this point, thus balancing the scale a bit.

Sent from...wait, where am I again?

I see just three major obstacles. The Barren Mountain chain, White Cap, and of course Katahdin.

At this point I don't think the terrain much factors in, barring heavy mud and downed trees...I think he's got the worst over, still some tough sections, but the first 144 miles of Springer to wherever is no cake walk. However, you got that last 5 miles up Big K, but it's only five miles and it's the last five miles.

Big K is tough stuff, but when I did it in October 2006 it was probably the easiest 5 mile section, because I was on such a high. So I do think the psychological factor must be factored in.

Jurek is going to get this.

Thx Mapman. I suppose those stats are for SJ going NOBO verse JPD going SOBO. Different hikes/different terrain in the last 400 miles or so so one could easily take things out of context based on these stats.
